J.E. Broyhill Civic Center Announces 2017-2018 Showcase of Stars

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute’s J.E. Broyhill Civic Center has announced the lineup for its 2017-2018 Showcase of Stars. This season will feature concerts and several shows from Foothills Performing Arts, the resident theatre group for the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center.

 

Following is a schedule of events for the season:
FPA Presents “The Complete History of America (Abridged)”

Sept. 28-30; 7 p.m. nightly, two shows on Sept 30 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

600 years of history in 6,000 seconds … history will never be the same! From Washington to Watergate, yea verily from the Bering Straits to Baghdad, from New World to New World Order – THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF AMERICA (ABRIDGED) is a 90-minute rollercoaster ride through the glorious quagmire that is American History, reminding us that it’s not the length of your history that matters — it’s what you’ve done with it!  See the talented local players of Foothills Performing Arts bring our history to life – like you’ve never seen it before. Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for students over 12 and $7.50 for children 12 and under.  A pre-show meal will be offered prior to each 7 p.m. performance. Cost of the meal is an additional $11.

David Phelps

David Phelps

Saturday, Oct. 14; 7:30 p.m.

Christian artist and “Gaither Homecoming” alumnus David Phelps will bring his concert to the Civic Center stage in October. Phelps, a Tomball, Texas native, has released numerous solo albums and has lent his voice to a number of Gaither Vocal Band releases. Phelps sang tenor with the award-winning ensemble from 1997 to 2005 and from 2009 to 2016. This solo concert tour comes on the heels of the release of “Hymnal,” his latest solo project. Phelps will provide an unforgettable night of entertainment for Christian music fans of all ages.  Tickets are $30. There will also be a “Meet and Greet” event prior to the show. Tickets for the show and the pre-show “Meet and Greet with David Phelps” are $50 and include “Artist Circle” seating.

 

“Hot Jazz Lenoir” featuring Todd Wright’s ASU Jazz Big Band with The Silvio Martinat Swing Band

Saturday, Nov. 4, 7:30 p.m.

Enjoy a night of “hot jazz” with some of the area’s most talented musicians. “The Hot Jazz Lenoir” will feature the Appalachian State University Jazz Big Band and the Silvio Martinat Swing Band, a local favorite that got its start at CCC&TI as a performance class.  If you love jazz, this concert is a must-see. Tickets are $11 for adults and $5.50 for students/children.

 

Raleigh Ringers

Saturday, Nov. 11, 7:30 p.m.

The Raleigh Ringers, an internationally acclaimed handbell choir based in Raleigh, N.C., will return to the Civic Center in 2017 to ring in the holiday season. Since its founding in 1990, The Raleigh Ringers have been dazzling concert audiences with unique interpretations of sacred, secular and popular music, including famous rock ‘n’ roll tunes arranged just for handbells. Tickets are $11 for adults and $5.50 for students/children.

 

FPA Presents “Miracle on 34th Street”

Nov. 30 – Dec. 3, 7 p.m. nightly, 2 p.m. on Sunday;

Dinner and a Show on Friday, Dec. 1

Kris Kringle takes on the cynics among us in this adaptation of the popular holiday favorite. It’s the perfect holiday show for the entire family. The local players of FPA will present the classic tale of the white-bearded gentleman claiming to be the real Santa Claus who brings about a genuine Miracle on 34th Street – spreading a wave of love throughout New York City, fostering camaraderie between Macy’s and Gimbel’s Department Stores and convincing a divorced mother, her somber daughter and the entire state of New York that Santa Claus is no myth.  A Christmas buffet dinner will be offered at 6 p.m. prior to the Friday night event on Dec. 1. Cost for the dinner is $15 per person. Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for students over 12 and $7.50 for children 12 and under. 

 

Puddingstone

Saturday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m.

Puddingstone formed first as a trio featuring percussion, hammered dulcimer, harp and flutes. Over the years, it has grown to a six to seven member band including vocals, guitar, synthesizer and sometimes fiddle. The genres they play range from Americana classics to Celtic, folk, New Age, Flamenco and some classical selections. Make plans to attend a night of unique, local talent with Puddingstone. Tickets are $11 for adults and $5.50 for students/children.

 

Milton Harkey Bluegrass presents Dailey & Vincent

Saturday, Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Milton Harkey Bluegrass presents Dailey & Vincent on Saturday, Jan. 6. Dubbed by CMT as “The Rock Stars of Bluegrass,” the Dailey & Vincent duo has been hailed throughout the music industry as one of the most exciting, reputable and elite Bluegrass bands in America. Dailey and Vincent have won numerous awards for their uniquely contagious and riveting music. Get your tickets early as Dailey & Vincent is usually a sell-out show! Tickets are $30 for adults and $16 for students/children.

 

American Spiritual Ensemble

Thursday, Jan. 25 7:30

Comprised of some of the finest classically trained singers in the United States, the mission of the American Spiritual Ensemble is to keep the American Negro spiritual alive.   Since its inception by Dr. Everett McCorvey in 1995, the vocalists have thrilled audiences around the world with their dynamic repertoire ranging from spirituals to classical to jazz and Broadway numbers highlighting the Black experience. The American Spiritual Ensemble is unique in that over 90 percent of the members are accomplished soloists who have sung in theaters and opera houses world wide, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, and abroad in Italy, Germany, Britain, Scotland, Spain and Japan. The resulting sound of this group is something that choral groups with two or three featured soloists cannot duplicate.  Tickets are $20 for adults and $9 for students/children.

 

FPA Presents “The Diary of Anne Frank”

Feb. 8-10; 7 p.m. nightly, two shows on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The talented, local players at Foothills Performing Arts will bring to life the Tony Award-winning play, “The Diary of Anne Frank.” The haunting story, based on Frank’s memoirs, chronicles the nearly two year time period that  Anne and her family spend in hiding to escape Nazi persecution in World War II era Holland. Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for students over 12 and $7.50 for children 12 and under. 

 

Temptations Revue

“A Temptations Revue featuring Bo Henderson”

Thursday, Feb. 15, 7:30 p.m.

Bringing the unforgettable songs of Motown back to the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center is “A Temptations Revue” featuring former lead singer of the Temptations and Grammy Award winner Barrington “Bo” Henderson (1998-2003), one of the only Temptations lead singers to have received a Grammy. This dynamic and driving show spans more than a decade of Temptations classics, every one of these songs among the most recognizable and culture-defining songs in pop music history: “My Girl,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “Get Ready,” “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg,” “Just My Imagination,” “I Wish It Would Rain” and so many more! Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for students/children.

Mnozil Brass

Saturday, Feb. 24, 7:30 p.m.

Mnozil Brass is an Austrian brass septet. They play classical, jazz and other styles of music using traditional brass instruments and more unusual instruments such as the customized rotary valved trumpet and bass trumpet. Music is presented with a typical Austrian style of humor. Elements of slapstick exist next to virtuosic brass playing. Tickets are $26 for adults and $16 for students/children.

 

Caldwell Traditional Musicians Showcase  

Saturday, March 10, 7:30 p.m.

Celebrating its 20th Anniversary, the Caldwell Traditional Musicians Showcase hosted by local favorite Strictly Clean and Decent will feature several local musicians who help keep the community’s rich history of traditional music alive today. Don’t miss the 20th Annual Caldwell Traditional Musicians Showcase.  A Local Food Buffet dinner will be available prior to the show at 6 p.m. Cost for the meal is $15 per person. Tickets are $11 for adults and $5.50 for students/children.

 

The Victor Wooten Trio

Friday, April 6, 7:30 p.m.

Five-time Grammy Award-winning musician Victor Wooten has been called the most influential bassist since Jaco Pastorius. He is a master innovator of the bass guitar, gifted composer, arranger, producer, vocalist, multi instrumentalist and founding member of Béla Fleck & The Flecktones. Never satisfied with the status quo, Vic is always growing as a person, artist, teacher and always willing to share his gifts with all who desire to learn. His legendary live shows continues the tradition of funkified virtuosity forged by James Brown, Funkadelic and Prince. Don’t miss the Victor Wooten Trio featuring Dennis Chambers on drums and Bob Franceschini on sax. Tickets for the show are $20 for adults and $10 for students/children.

 

FPA Presents “The Odd Couple” (Female Version)

May 3-5, 2018; 7 p.m. nightly, two shows on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Unger and Madison are at it again! Florence Unger and Olive Madison, that is, in Neil Simon’s hilarious contemporary comic classic: the female version of The Odd Couple. Instead of the poker party that begins the original version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. The Pidgeon sisters have been replaced by the two Constanzuela brothers. But the hilarity remains the same.  Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for students over 12 and $7.50 for children 12 and under.
