TODAY & SATURDAY: The Ashe County Bluegrass and Old Time Fiddlers Convention will be Held July 28th and 29th.

The 48th Annual Ashe County Bluegrass and Old Time Fiddlers Convention is coming back to the High County next weekend, July 28-29th. The Convention will be held at Ashe park in West Jefferson and is Sponsored by the Ashe County Arts Council. The camp will open July 27th at 4 p.m. The convention is a great place to listen to music as well as see the region’s best old time traditional and bluegrass musicians.

The Appalachian Barn Dance will be held Friday night of the convention featuring Whitetop Mountain Band.

“There will also be a professional dance caller,” Rebecca Williams, Ashe County Arts programming director. “Just a fun time for people to dance,”The dance starts at 7  p.m at the Lakeview Shelter at Ashe Park and tickets are $5 for adults. Children 12 and under are free with an adult.

The competitions will be held on Saturday. The Gary Poe Bluegrass and Old Time Radio Show will be broadcasting on WKSK live on the park stage with special guests, Strictly Strings.

“The youth competition starting at 12:00pm. Adult individual instruments start at 2:00pm, dance competitions at 6:00pm and band competitions at 7:30pm,” said Williams.

First, second and third place winners will receive a cash prize for all competitions with other place winners receiving a rosette.

“Competitors are often Local and regional but many people coming from further distances to compete. It’s pretty competitive.”

“Anyone is welcome to come and set up lawn chairs and spend the whole afternoon with us,”said Williams. “There will be food available such as hot dogs and hamburgers as well as barbecue.” 

Concessions are sponsored by the Todd Ruritan Club.

Camping spots are also available on a first come first serve basis. Prices are dependent on whether you are looking for one with or without an electrical component and will be available starting on Thursday, July 27.

You don’t want to miss this weekend full of music, dancing and “jamming” performances.Tickets are $10 for Saturday or $15 wristbands can be purchased for both days. Proceeds from the event will go towards the Junior Appalachian Musicians Program  also known as“Jam program.”
