A beautiful weekend in Banner Elk made for a great time at the final installment of this year’s Art on the Greene festival series.

Orchestrated by a private promoter for a decade beforehand, the event first became known as “Art on the Greene” last summer when the town owned the old school property for the first time.

“The Art On the Greene events are sponsored by the Town of Banner Elk each year on the three holiday weekends of summer: Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day,” said event coordinator Kimberly Tufts. “The fees paid by the artists for this master crafts event go toward the revitalization of the Historic Banner Elk School. The events are designed to embrace the hand-crafting traditions of our Appalachian region with work across a wide spectrum of mediums including: wood, metal, stone, clay, glass, and fibers. This year even the food was honored as an art with the addition of several fine food trucks from the Asheville area.”

For more information, call the Town of Banner Elk at 828-898-5398, visit www.townofbannerelk.org, contact Tufts at beshows@townofbannerelk.org or follow Art on the Greene on Facebook.

But don’t let its small size fool you — it’s also home to a four-year university, close to popular attractions, located between two of the region’s best known ski resorts and offers an array of options for shopping, dining, lodging and outdoor adventures.
