Volunteers Give More than 22,000 Hours, Raise More than $34,000 for ARHS in 2015

It was a great year for volunteers of Appalachian Regional Healthcare System (ARHS). Throughout 2015, volunteers contributed more than 22,000 hours of service at ARHS facilities and helped raise more than $34,000.

Blowing Rock Rehabilitation & Davant Extended Care Center

The volunteers at Blowing Rock Rehabilitation & Davant Extended Care Center raised more than $8,000 for resident needs through the Budget Box thrift store located across the street from the facility. These funds help provide items such as TV’s for patient rooms, supplies for residents to make ceramics, walkers and tilt recliners for residents. The volunteers also provided more than 5,000 hours of service ranging from music therapy to assisting with community outings.

Cannon Memorial Hospital

Volunteers at Cannon Memorial Hospital also had their hands full, as they sponsored three fundraisers. Proceeds from these efforts brought in more than $14,000. Of that amount, $9,000 provided 17 healthcare scholarships to support local students in pursuing careers in healthcare. The remainder of funds supported patient care service needs.

Cannon Memorial Hospital volunteers provided approximately 6,000 service hours across 30 departments throughout the hospital. Additionally, 12 volunteers received five-year service pins, five received 10-year service pins and three received 15-year service pins. One volunteer was presented with a certificate in recognition of 11,500 hours of volunteer service.

Watauga Medical Center

At Watauga Medical Center, volunteers provided hand-knitted caps for the cancer and birthing center patients, gifts for parents of newborn babies and support of a hospitality cart for the medical/surgical floors. Funds for these efforts came from $12,000 that volunteers raised through a single jewelry sale fundraiser.

Watauga Medical Center volunteers provided nearly 11,000 hours of volunteer service. Seven volunteers received five-year service pins, two received 10-year service pins and one volunteer received a 15-year service pin. Additionally, one volunteer was presented with a certificate in recognition of 13,000 hours of volunteer service.

Appalachian Regional Healthcare System would like to thank each and every person who volunteered in 2015.

“Health System volunteers are invaluable members of our healthcare team,” said Amy Crabbe, Sr. Vice President of People Services at ARHS. “They play an integral role in our mission to make life better for the communities we serve.”
