Upcoming Shows at Heritage Hall

Antigone: Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m.

The Barter Players will be presenting the classic Greek Tragedy Antigone to the public, free of charge with open seating. Sophocles created Antigone around the story of Oedipus’s two sons who alternated the rule of Thebes after their father Oedipus Rex had been removed from the throne. In Sophocles’ account, Eteocles decided not to share power with his brother after his tenure expired. Polynices left the kingdom, gathered an army and attacked the city of Thebes in a conflict called the Seven Against Thebes. Both brothers were killed in the battle.Heritage Hall Theatre

King Creon, who ascended to the throne of Thebes after the death of the brothers, decreed that Polynices was not to be buried or even mourned, on pain of death by stoning. Antigone, his sister, defied the order, but was caught. Then the classic Greek Tragedy unfolds to create a powerful memory and message for the audience. This show is a service provided to the school system and the public by Heritage Hall.
