Friends of the Watauga County Library’s 40th Birthday Party Coincides with Annual Holiday Book Sale

by Emma Speckman

Nov. 12, 2014. This weekend, Friends of the Watauga County Public Library kicks off the annual holiday book sale event a day early, with a members-only 40th birthday party for the organization set for Thursday, Nov. 13.

The celebration will be held at the Watuaga County Library and will run from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served and attendees will receive their choice of a free book.

The sale continues for members only on Friday, Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“The books are fabulous,” said Pat Alexander, a Board of Directors member and public relations specialist for the organization. Most books sell for either 50 cents or $1, but some rarer books and specialty coffee tables books will be priced higher, Alexander said. All books come from donations to the Friends of the Library.

The sale is a smaller-scale version of the book sale the organization puts on every spring and Alexander says both attract “all walks of life.”

“Student teachers love to come to the big sale and buy children’s books for 25, 50 cents,” she said.

Friends of the Library raises money for the public library through membership donations and their many annual fundraisers. The organization boasts more than 300 members, according to Alexander.

“It’s hard to tell, but there’s a goodly amount,” Alexander said. “It’s great fun.”

Those interested can become members at the library. An individual membership costs $5 per year and a family membership runs $10 per year.
