1) HCAS Meeting May 20

The High Country Audubon Society (HCAS) will have its next meeting on Tuesday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express in Boone. HCAS member Jessie Dale will talk about Audubon’s Hog Island Camp in Maine. HCAS invites the public to attend the monthly meetings and field trips. 2) Camp UREC Releases Day Camp Schedule

Camp UREC, located at the Student Recreation Center on the campus of Appalachian State University offers day camp sessions Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. from June 16-17 and July 7-25. General Camp is offered for rising second through rising sixth grade children. A Counselor in Training program and Adventure Week are designed specifically for rising seventh to rising ninth grade children. Weekly themes are: Space Jam, ZooREC, H2Outstanding, iDiscover and Adventure Week and Time Capsule. 3) S.C.A.M.S. Held May 22

Come learn more about the different scams that target seniors and disabled adults in our community at S.C.A.M.S. (Seniors Can Avoid Money Scams) sponsored by the Watauga County Elderly & Disabled Adult Abuse Prevention Team. Speakers will include David Kirkman, Special Deputy Attorney General, DIane Trainor, NC Senior Medicare Patrol Outreach Specialist with SHIIP and a detective from the Boone Police Department. The event will be held on May 22 from 12:30-4 p.m. at the Courtyard Marriott. Light refreshments will be provided by Medi Home Care and Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation. The Elderly & Disabled Adult Abuse Prevention Team is a voluntary collaboration of several community-based agencies and organizations created to protect and promote the health and wellfare of elderly and disabled adults within Watauga County. The team will use inter-agency cooperation to provide in-service training, prevention education, crisis response systems and statistical information to eliminate abuse, neglect and exploitation of this vulnerable population.
