imgresSept. 8, 2014. On Saturday, Sept. 13, Elk Knob State Park will serve as the setting for an event that strives to preserve and celebrate the heritage of the Meat Camp community. The tenth annual Elk Knob Community Headwaters day will kick off at 11 a.m. with live music, raffles, clogging performances, a pot luck dinner and more history and heritage than you can shake a stick at.

This year’s event will be dedicated to the late Tommy Walsh who helped found the Elk Knob Community Heritage Organization (EKCHO) and restarted the Community Headwaters Day for the community to enjoy but sadly passed away in October 2013.

“I have known Tommy all of my life,” said Patsy Eller, who organizes the event.

“Tommy was the one who really helped us get started with this. He really took an interest in it and wanted it to happen.”

The entertainment lineup is full of local favorites that guests are sure to enjoy. Check out the lineup below:

  • 11 a.m. – The Dollar Brothers
  • 11:25 a.m. – Cecil Gurganus and Strictly Strings
  • 11:50 a.m. – Welcome announcements and potluck lunch
  • 12 p.m. – Maggie Idol
  • 12:25 p.m. –  Barney Hodgson and Gary Waters
  • 1:15 p.m. – Garret Munday and Megan Sheppard
  • 1:40 – The Appalachian Cloggers
  • 2:05 – The Winker Family
  • 2:30 – Raffle announcements
  • 2:40 – George Wilson and Friends

Aside from the music, attendees will also be able to bid on numerous silent auction items that will be available, with proceeds benefitting the Elk Knob Community Heritage Organization.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a pot luck dish to share with the rest of the crowd. The potluck picnic is an annual tradition that goes back even further than the event itself.

“This year, we have four new things coming up,” Eller said. “We will have basket weaving, hook and rugs, Steven Shoemake is going to make a powder horn and John Peterson will set up a table demonstrating how to make a banjo.”
