Free Foot Care Check Offered Thursday, Oct. 30: Wound Care Center Celebrates Four Years in the High Country

Oct. 24, 2014. In celebration of the Wound Care Center of Appalachian Regional Health Care System’s (ARHS) fourth anniversary, a free 1412foot care check will be available on Thursday, Oct. 30, from 1-3 p.m. For anyone experiencing tingling or numbness in their feet, wounds or calluses that won’t heal or diabetes, the foot check is a great first step in correcting these problems. The wound care center is located at 169 Doctors Dr. in Boone.

Under the direction of Paul S. Dagher, M.D., Medical Director of the Wound Care Center, the experienced Wound Care Center staff includes a wound-educated Physician Assistant, a certified wound ostomy continence registered nurse, a wound-educated registered nurse and a welcoming front desk staff.

These wound care professionals have expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic wounds such as pressure ulcers, lower extremity arterial and venous stasis ulcers, neuropathic and diabetic foot ulcers, traumatic wounds and dehisced surgical wounds. Treatment options include compression treatment, negative pressure wound therapy, wound irrigation and debridement, therapeutic wound care modalities and full ostomy services including pre-operative education, stoma marking and post-operative care.

In addition, education about the prevention of and care for chronic wounds is a growing focus on the Wound Care Center staff. An emphasis is placed on nutrition, with the opportunity for referrals to a registered dietician, which can contribute to a healthier lifestyle and faster healing process. Diabetes education plays a large role in effective care for chronic wounds and referral to a diabetic educator is often initiated. Prevention, as well as treatment, is distinctly improved when patients embrace the education and healing process.
