March 26, 2013. There was spring in the feet (if not in the weather) for the March Watauga County Democratic Party Cash Mob participants on Saturday.
Black Bear Books in the Boone Mall welcomed the cash mob with coffee and cookies as buyers filled the book aisles looking for everything from the newest best seller to an extra special children’s book. Those who couldn’t decide bought gift certificates for friends and family.
“What a great day,” said Marsha Walpole, organizer of the cash mob. “It’s just such a special feeling to know that by buying at local businesses, we keep the money moving locally, we get to make new friends, and we get to check out brand new businesses and salute the ones that have been here for decades. Everyone had a wonderful time. I mean, who doesn’t like to spend a little money, have a great lunch, and support the buy local movement, all at the same time?”
Walpole says the cash mob movement in Watauga County, begun less than a year ago, has already pumped close to $20,000 into local cash registers.
The next “mob” will be held in April, and nominations for the next businesses to be supported are already pouring in. You can keep up to date by liking “Buy Local—Watauga Cash Mob” on Facebook.
