Group Asks for Submitted Questions for Candidates Forum in Blowing Rock Sept. 28

A number of questions have been submitted to the Blowing Rock Civic Association for their “Know Your Candidates” meeting. The community is invited to attend this important meeting and to email questions for the candidates to Wilcox@brcivic.com before 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25.

BRCA-headerThose attending will have an opportunity to submit written questions to the candidates at the meeting.

All questions will be reviewed by former Blowing Rock Councilman Keith Tester and former Superior Court Judge Bob Burroughs. A former Blowing Rock council member says that he is convinced that his published answers to questions asked him and other candidates by legendary Blowing Rocket editor Jerry Burns were the biggest factor in his election to the Town council.

After candidates are elected, citizens will not have an opportunity to directly question the members at an official council meeting over the next four years of their term (two years for the Mayor). Questions during the election period, therefore, become very important in gaining an understanding of where a candidate stands on the many important issues that come before council.

All Blowing Rock candidates for town offices including Mayor J. B. Lawrence, mayoral candidate Charlie Sellers, Councilman Dan Phillips, former Councilman Jim Steele and Councilman Albert Yount will attend this meeting.

Many citizens think that Blowing Rock is at a very crucial point in its history because of sharply increasing commercial and residential real estate development impacting and radiating from nearby cities and towns and the growth of Appalachian State University.

Also as the long delayed widening of Highway 321 comes to a close there is an anticipated large increase in traffic coming up the mountain. Many citizens are concerned that there will be constant pressure on town government to promote quantity of development and growth rather than quality that will sacrifice the “village character” of downtown in order to increase tax revenue. Others citizens are dedicated to increasing commercial development and population growth in Blowing Rock.

The Blowing Rock Civic Association urges everyone interested in the future of Blowing Rock to attend the “Know Your Candidates” meeting next Monday sponsored by the association and to also attend the Candidates Forum sponsored by the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce on Monday, October 19, 2015, at 5:30 P.M. at the Blowing Rock School auditorium.
