Oscar “Ozzie” Godwin, Jr., D. April 29, 2012
Oscar “Ozzie” Godwin, Jr., age 85, of Teaberry Hills, Boone, died Sunday evening, April 29, 2012, at Watauga Medical Center.
Mr. Godwin was born November 22, 1926 in West Palm Beach, Florida, a son of the late Oscar O. Godwin, Sr. and Marie Murray Godwin. He was a retired elementary school principal, and a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Boone. Mr. Godwin also served in the United States Navy.
Mr. Godwin is survived by two daughters, Cindy Godwin of Roswell, Georgia and Carolyn Godwin of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; one sister, Shirley Roberts and husband Joe of Indiana, and two cousins, Mel Wiles of Jacksonville, Florida and Jerry Wiles of West Palm Beach, Florida.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helena L. Godwin.
Memorial Services for Oscar “Ozzie” Godwin, Jr. will be conducted Saturday afternoon, May 5, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Grace Lutheran Church in Boone. Officiating will be Pastor Derick Boggs. Entombment will follow at the Grace Lutheran Church Columbarium.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall, following the memorial service.

Judy Ragan Hatten, D. April 27, 2012
Judy Ragan Hattan, age 58, of Boone, passed away Friday, April 27th, at the Watauga Medical Center.
Mrs. Hatten is survived by one daughter, Tabitha Hatten of Boone; two sons, Pete Hatten of Statesville and Michael Hatten of Boone; one granddaughter, Sierra Silcox of Statesville; one grandson, Kade Hatten of Statesville, and one brother, Jim Eller and wife Cindy of Zionville. She is also survived by one half-brother, one half-sister, and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Carlton Hatten, and her father and mother, Marion Ragan and Vivian Eller.
A Memorial Service for Judy Ragan Hattan will be conducted Friday morning, May 4, 2012, at 11:00 o’clock, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Officiating will be Reverend Bud Russell.
The family will receive friends Friday morning, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Barbara Jean Hayes Cornell, D. April 26, 2012
Mrs. Barbara Jean ‘Jeannie’ Hayes Cornell age 67, of Laurel Fork Road, Vilas passed away Thursday morning, April 26, 2012, at her home. Born March 15, 1945 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Mildred Coffey Hayes and the late Blaine Hayes. Mrs. Cornell was employed with Boone Urology for 21 years. She was a lifetime member and organist at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church.
Jeannie is survived by her husband Jerry Cornell; her children, Tommy Cornell and wife Brenda, of Vilas, Beaver Cornell and wife, Lori, of Mountain City, Tennessee, and Jackie Ward and husband, Sonny, of Vilas; her mother, Mildred Coffey Hayes of Vilas; seven grandchildren; Blaine Cornell of Apex, David Cornell and wife, Marisa, of Vilas, Alisha Cornell of Vilas, Taylor Cornell of Mountain City, Tennessee, Mikaela Cornell of Vilas, Kortney and Wesley Bodenhamer both of Mountain City, Tennessee; one great granddaughter; Jovie Cornell of Vilas; and her sister, Joanne Townsend and a special nephew, Justin Townsend, both of Vilas. She was preceded in death by her father, Blaine Hayes and her brother-in-law, Gale Townsend.
Graveside services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, April 29, 2012, at 2 o’clock at Adams Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Wynn Greer, Rev. Carl Wilson, Rev. Ray Greene and Rev. Melvin Hodges. The family will recieve friends Saturday evening from 5 until 7 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Dora Culler Lewis, D. April 25, 2012
Mrs. Dora Culler Lewis, age 94, of 191 Clint Lewis Road, Boone, passed away, Wednesday evening, April 25, 2012, to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and to join her many family members and friends.
Mrs. Lewis was born August 28, 1917 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Frank and Josie Pennell Culler. She was a homemaker and a retired employee of Watauga Medical Center, with 20 years of service. Mrs. Lewis was a member of Meat Camp Baptist Church for over 70 years.
Mrs. Lewis is survived by three sons, John Lewis and wife Liz, and Walter Lewis and wife Margie, all of Boone, and Bill Lewis of Vero Beach, Florida; two daughters, Jeanne Lewis Blizard of Winston-Salem, and Ellen Grunewald and husband Lee of Leesburg, Virginia; two brothers, Odell Culler and wife Celia, and Estel Culler, all of Boone; two sisters, Ruby Jones of Boone, and Carolyn Miller and husband J.D. of High Point; one sister-in-law, Betty Culler of Springfield, Missouri; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Lewis of Tennessee and Florida; four close and personal friends, Nancy Watson, Kim Harmon, Tracy Critcher, and Lucille Wilson, and nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, one step great-grandchild, whom she adored. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, W. Clint Lewis; one son, Joseph C. Lewis; one daughter, Sandy L. Ward; a son-in-law, Richard E. Blizard; one sister, Nancy Justice, and two brothers, Baxter Culler, and Armon Culler.
Funeral services for Mrs. Dora Culler Lewis will be conducted Saturday afternoon, April 28, 2012, at 2:00 o’clock, at Meat Camp Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 12:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Mike Townsend and Reverend Kenny Newberry. Burial will follow in Meat Camp Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, from 12:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

William R. Hodges, D. April 25, 2012
Mr. William Robert ‘Robin’ Hodges, Jr., age 57, of Highway 421 North, Vilas, died Wednesday morning April 25, 2012 at his home. Born March 6, 1955 in Avery County, he was a son of the late William Robert and Jeanne Banner Hodges. Robin was an avid photographer and enjoyed spending time with his friends at Watauga Lake. He was a former asphalt plant operator, having worked for Brown Brothers Construction and Maymead Construction.
He is survived by two sisters; Rebecca Greene and husband Elson of Boone, and Susan Hodges of Zionville, and four nephews; Ed and David Winebarger, and John and Shawn Greene.
Funeral services for Mr. Robin Hodges will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 2 o’clock until 3 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Jim R. Roberts, D. April 25, 2012
Mr. James Rodney “Jim” Roberts, age 83, of Pinnacle Drive, Boone, died Wednesday morning April 25, 2012 at home. Born December 11, 1928 in Greenville, North Carolina, he was a son of the late James William Holmes Roberts and Janie Ross Roberts. Mr. Roberts received his BS degree from East Carolina University and his MME degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Jim taught at the University of Indiana, where he was the chair of the Department of Music and the high school band director. He joined the faculty of Appalachian State University in 1967 working in the College of Education. Jim was a US Navy Veteran, a Mason and an active member of the Watauga County Community Band. He was a former general manager of the Horn In the West.
He is survived by his wife; Jacqui Roberts; one daughter; Genele R. Byrd and husband Mike of Boone, one son; William Riley Roberts and wife Judy of Boone, five grandchildren; J. R. Byrd, Lisa Byrd, Derek White and wife Keri, Kendra Roberts and Kali Roberts, three great grandchildren; Carter Roberts, Jackie White and Ryan White, one sister Carol Wilson of Sumter, South Carolina, and two brothers; Butch Roberts of Kinston and Bobby Roberts of Greenville. He was preceded in death by his parents; James and Janie Ross Roberts, his first wife; Nina Abernathy Roberts, and his second wife, Alice Jones Roberts.
Funeral services for Mr. James Rodney “Jim” Roberts will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at Deerfield United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Evelyn Lemons and Rev. Marion Swan. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Watauga High School Band, 300 Go Pioneers Drive, Boone, NC 28607. The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 10 o’clock until 11 o’clock at Deerfield United Methodist Church.
