Maude Burton Farthing (June 10, 1915 – June 5, 2014)

Mrs. Maude B. Farthing, age 98, of 208 Frozenhead Ridge Road, Sugar Grove, North Carolina, and more recently Mountain City Care Center went to be with her Lord on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at the nursing home.

Farthing
Farthing

She was born June 10, 1915 in Butler, Tennessee to the late Taylor and Ella Younce Burton. She was the second child of four girls of whom she lived longer than anyone in her family. The sisters preceding her in death were Ola Mae Burton Smith, Lucille Burton Presnell, and Lois Burton McElyea.

She is survived by two daughters Joyce Phillips and Wanda Farthing, of Sugar Grove, a son; Robert Taylor Farthing, and wife Sandra Kay of Butler, Tennessee. Not only is Maude survived by her three children mentioned, but is survived by her grandchildren, Terry Ward, Brian and Kevin Farthing, and Robin Stout. She has eight great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and a nephew, and a very special sister-in-law, Chestilie Farthing, age 96 years young.

Maude’s father, Taylor Burton passed away unexpectedly when she was only 4 1/2 years old. Her mother moved the family from “up on the mountain,” down to the city of Butler where there was a good school for the girls to attend and she could find work to support her family. Most of Ella’s brothers and sisters encouraged her to put the girls in an orphanage, but she would not agree. Although they may have had to work hard, they still had a home with a loving mother. Each child was taught to work– Ola Mae did the house work, Maude and Lucille did the outside work such as getting the wood for the stove to keep warm. They also fed the outside animals, and some of their favorites were their chickens, called Mr. & Mrs. Roller. At this time Lois was too young to work.

Maude grew up in Butler as a happy child attending Watauga Academy. One of her fondest memories was attending Butler Baptist Church with Reverend Robert DeVault as pastor, where she met her savior as a young girl.

Maude married Shaw Farthing, December 22, 1932 and moved from the city of Butler back up to the mountain at the State Line. To this union was born Joyce Pauline Phillips, Robert Taylor and Wanda Maude Farthing. Shaw and Maude were together 58 years until in 1990, Shaw passed away due to lung cancer.

Maude and Shaw were very instrumental in helping establish Mountain View Baptist Church in 1948. She was a charter member and served as Church Clerk until 1971. She is presently a member of Meadow View Baptist Church, where she taught the Ladies Sunday School Class for several years. Maude loved to attend worship services and did so as long as her health would permit. Preacher Bill Warren has become a blessing to her during her sickness — reading and discussing the Bible and praying with her. She always looked forward to his visits.

Although Maude may have had a poor financial upbringing, her mother instilled love, honesty, hard work, and integrity in each of the four girls. Maude was a strong and independent woman, an avid reader, enjoyed her gardening and working in her flowers. We are about to lose this strong generation of people who had to endure the depression, World War II, and a hard life. In recent years when she was sick, she would say “I wish the Lord would come for me….” Maude now has her request and is at peace.

Funeral services for Mrs. Maude B. Farthing will be conducted Sunday, June 8, 2014 2:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Reverend Bill Warren, Reverend Richard Jones, and Reverend Ray Greene. Burial will follow in the Farthing Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 12:30 until 2:00 o’clock, prior to the service, at Hampton Funeral Service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Farthing Family Cemetery, in care of Robin Stout, 527 Leffler Street, Mountain City, Tennessee, 37683.
