Linda R. Woodard (Dec. 11, 1946 – Feb. 9, 2015)
Linda Rominger Woodard, 68, of Dutch Creek Extension, the Valle Crucis Community, and formerly of Morganton, passed away Monday Feb. 9, 2015.
Born Dec. 11, 1946 in Avery County, Linda was a daughter of Mildred Smith Rominger Tester and the late Johnnie Wesley Rominger. She was a member of Mount Home Baptist Church in Morganton. Before retirements, Ms. Woodard was employed at Western Carolina Center and Autumn Care in Morganton.
Surviving are her mother, Mildred Tester of Banner Elk, the Valle Crucis community; brother, Steve Tester of Banner Elk; sister, Carol Tester and husband, Mike Richardson, of Deep Gap; and two sons, Douglas Woodard and Wesley Woodard, both of Morganton. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m., at Clark’s Creek Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Jerry Gamble. The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon from 1 until 2 p.m., prior to services, at the church. Burial will follow in the Clark’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Gilbert V. Barrington, Jr. (Aug. 24, 1946 – Feb. 7, 2015)
Capt. Gilbert Vernon Barrington was born Aug. 24, 1946 in Tyrrell County to Jenny Mae and Gilbert Barrington.
He is survived by five sisters. Nelson Cox, Carolyn Cutrell, Selma Watson, Hope Dough & Kathy Spencer. Two daughters and their husbands, Laura & Hank Beasley of Wanchese and Angie and Sean Hooper of Manteo. Also, son Jason Todd of Virginia. Two granddaughters Cole Beasley and Jeni Hooper. Two grandsons Fisher and Keegan Beasley of North Carolina and one grandson Phillip Tuck of Virginia and granddaughter Aleia Barrington of Ohio. Vernon was preceded in death by his beloved wife Karen.
Capt. Vern spent most of his life in Dare County as a Hunting Guide and Charter Boat Captain and fisherman where generations of young men and women became a part of his life and stories.
The last few years Capt. Vern lived in Western NC to be near his best friend Donna Lynn Egan.
Service of Celebration will be held at Orion Baptist Church, Monday evening Feb. 9 at 7 pm. All friends are welcome.
A service of celebration will also be held in Dare County at Roanoke Island Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2 pm. Capt. Vern requested gifts of love to be made to Roanoke Island Presbyterian Day care online or at 855 Hwy. 64/264, Manteo, NC 27954.

Mrs. Lucille H. Greene (June 4, 1922 – Feb. 7, 2015)
Mrs. Lucille Hayes Greene, 92, of Sable Drive, Boone, passed away Saturday afternoon, February 7, 2015 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation, surrounded by her family.
Born June 4, 1922 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late Tom and Lura Ward Hayes. Mrs. Greene was a homemaker and longtime active member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, and the Young at Heart Sunday School Class. Lucille enjoyed gardening and outside plants. She was a compassionate, caring wife, mom, mamaw and friend.
She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Stephens and husband Doug of Culpeper, Virginia, three sons, Rex Greene and wife Mary of Mountain City, Tom Greene and wife Gale of Boone and Lynn Greene and wife Tracey of Boone, one sister, Mildred Herman, two brothers, Joe Hayes and Henry Hayes and wife Myra, one sister in law, Lois Hayes, 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Burl Greene, one sister and four brothers.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lucille Hayes Greene will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 14, at 12 noon at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Dr. Scott Courtney. The family will receive friends prior to the service Saturday morning at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home from 10 o’clock until noon. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. Pallbearers will be her grandsons; Blake Bates, Kelley Greene, David Greene, Michael Greene, Jeffrey Stephens, Phillip Greene, Jonathan Greene and Josh Greene.

Everett E. Cole (Oct. 6, 1932 – Feb. 7, 2015)
On Feb. 7, 2015, Everett Edward Cole, 82, of Vilas, left this earth on his final journey to join his heavenly family.
Everett passed away unexpectedly at his daughter’s home in Port St. Lucie Florida where he loved spending winter month’s with his devoted wife of 63 years, Jean Brown Cole. Mr. Cole was a 60 year member and former Deacon at Oak Grove Baptist Church. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. After retiring from the NC DOT, Everett enjoyed visiting and spending quality time with elderly friends and neighbors. He was a 32 Degree Mason and past master of Masonic Snow Lodge #363.
A man of family dedication, ‘Daddy Everett’ as known to many, is survived by his wife, Jean; two daughters, Jimmie Ann Yates of Port St. Lucie, Fl. And Linda Councill of Vilas; son, Eddie Cole and wife, Tomoko, of Fuquay-Varina; five grandchildren, Chris Greene of Vilas, Amanda Dickerson and husband, Hill, of Wake Forest, Cody Councill of Raleigh, Jonathan Cole of Osaka, Japan, and Justin Cole of Fuquay-Varina; three great-grandchildren, Dylan Greene of Boone, Ava Grace and Hadley Dickerson, both of Wake Forest; brother, Clarence Cole of Boone; and sisters-in-law, Christine Cole of Boone and Joanne Cole of Lewisville, and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents, Wiley and Lena Houck Cole; brothers, Clyde and Bill Cole; and sister, Barbara Ann Adams and his son in law Buddy Yates.

Charles E. Whitman (June 5, 1932 – Feb. 7, 2015)
Charles Edward Whitman, 82, of Grand Blvd., Boone, passed away Saturday morning. Feb. 7, 2015, at Watauga Medical Center.
Born June 5, 1932 in Salisbury, he was a son of John Shelton and Marie McDaniel Whitman. Charlie was a member of Advent Christian Church.
Mr. Whitman retired from the NC State Bureau of Investigation as a Special Agent in Charge, serving the state for 30 years. For 3 years he served as director of the City-County Bureau of Criminal Identification in Greenville, NC for 3 years, and for 15 years after retirement from the state, he served as the loss prevention manager for Belk Department Store in Boone.
Mr. Whitman is survived by his wife of 37 years, Patricia Maddux Whitman; former spouse, Peggy Whitman of Lenoir; son, Gary Whitman and wife, Mary Lynn, of Davidson; and grandson, Patrick Whitman and wife, Ashley, of Blacksburg, Va.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Whitman; and a sister, Linda Whitman.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, at 2 PM at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Pastors Gordon Noble, Munsey Millaway and Robert Earp. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

Minnie A. Story (June 2, 1943 – Feb. 5, 2015)
Minnie Arnette Story, 71, of Arnett Hollow Road, Vilas, passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 5, 2015, at her home.
Born June 24, 1943 in Avery County, she was a daughter of Ralph Sr., and Grace Hayes Arnette. Mrs. Story was a member of Baird’s Creek Baptist Church.
Minnie loved the Lord, and her family with all her heart. She was a housewife, mother and seamstress. In her spare time, she was devoted to her quilting, assembling stuffed dolls and animals, and tending her flower gardens. She enjoyed a passion for softball, playing first base for a number of years with leagues sponsored by Watauga County Parks and Recreation.
Mrs. Story is survived by her husband of 53 years, Larry Finley Story; four daughters, Sharon Crump and husband, Frank, of Vilas, Holly Andrews and husband, Terry, of Boone, Janie Dancy and husband, Ted, of Zionville, and Gail Robinson and husband, Harold, of Vilas; her son, Lee Story of Vilas; ten grandchildren, Nicole Wagoner, Amanda Crump, Jessica Hicks, Kelly Mejia, Benji Andrews, Laura Roberts, Kim Robinson Kayla, and Riley and Samantha Story; eight great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Rachael, Christian, Timothy, Dustin, Jacob, Bella, and Joshua; three step-grandchildren, Teddy and Michael Dancy, and Justin Dancy and wife Jessica; three step-great grandchildren, Cindy, Seaira and Emma Katierose; sister, Linda Arnette and husband, Harry, of Banner Elk; brother, O.J. Arnette and wife, Edith, of Lenoir; and two sisters-in-law, Jean Arnette of Vilas, and Penny Arnette of Sugar Grove.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Arnette, Sr. and Grace Hayes Arnette; three brothers, Ralph Arnette, Jr., George Arnette, Sr. and Charles E. Arnette; one great-granddaughter, Alejandra Mejia; and her grandparents, Jim and Pearl Arnette; and Orris and Minnie Oliver Hayes.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m., at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Derick Wilson. Johnnie S. Berry (April 1, 1935 – Feb. 5, 2015)
Mrs. Johnnie Sue Berry, 79, of Berry Road, Banner Elk, passed away Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015. She was born in Caldwell County April 1, 1935. She was retired from retail sales and was a member of Foscoe Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by the following; her first husband Billy Davis, her second husband Clyde Mulls, and her third husband Clarence. A son and daughter, Richard Allan Davis and Tina Arnette Mull, grandsons, Richard Allan Davis, Jr., Christopher Sevink and Michael Wade Taylor, Jr.
Survivors include a son, Clyde Mull, Jr. of Lenoir, daughters, Linda Darlene Mull and Martha Sue Watson both of Lenoir and Karan Mashell Callaway of Foscoe. 14 grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.
Memorial Services will be private and at a later date.

Mrs. Kathryn G. Greene (Aug. 16, 1928 – Feb. 4, 2015)
Mrs. Kathryn Goodman Greene, 86, of Pine Swamp Road, Fleetwood, passed away Wednesday night, Feb. 4, 2015 at Watauga Medical Center.
Born Aug. 16, 1928 in Ashe County, she was the daughter of the late Rufus and Eunice Blackburn Goodman. Kathryn was a member of Old Fields Baptist Church. She was a loving wife and mother who worked alongside her husband and son on the farm.
She is survived by her son, Chris Greene, and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cline Greene and her parents, Rufus and Eunice Blackburn Goodman.
Funeral services for Mrs. Kathryn Goodman Greene will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Old Fields Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Larry Powers and Rev. Jack Miller. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 until 2 p.m. at Old Fields Baptist Church.

William Z. Parlier, Jr. (Nov. 22, 1953 – Feb. 3, 2015)
Mr. William Zain Parlier, Jr. 61, of Howard Winkler Road, Boone, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015.
Mr. Parlier was a native of Baltimore, Md. and the son of the late William Zain Parlier, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Cochran Parlier. He was a retired automotive mechanic and enjoyed fishing, especially fly fishing. An avid sharks teeth collector he donated many of his specimens to the Smithsonian Institute.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandchild, Ashley Marie Causby and a brother, Ernest M. Parlier.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Schell Parlier; one daughter, Shannon Rae and husband Rick Mathes of Newland; one son, William Zain Parlier, III. and wife Jennifer of Millers Creek; a sister, Kimberly Parlier Gray of Boone; a brother, John Parlier of Baltimore, Md. Two grandchildren, Bryan Keith Causby, Jr. and Mary Alyson Parlier. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Memorial services for Mr. William Zain Parlier, Jr. will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. in the Rutherwood Baptist Church, Boone, with Dr. Gary Lawrence officiating.
