Treva Norris Nichols (June 5, 1925 – April 18, 2016)

Treva Norris Nichols, 90, of Deep Gap, passed away Monday afternoon, April 18, 2016, at her home.

Mrs. Nichols was born on June 5, 1925 in Bentonville, Arkansas to the late Henry Clay Norris and Belva Lookabill Norris.

A devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, she was a long-time member of Laurel Springs Baptist Church in Deep Gap. She was a former employee of Moretz Lumber Company and Appalachian Ski Mountain.

Survivors include one son, Greg Nichols and wife Debra of Raleigh, two daughters Janice Burns and Sherry Davis of Blowing Rock, four grandchildren Brad Cranford and wife Kristie of Cary, Mason Marr of Boone, Hailey Mikiska and husband Wes of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Owen Nichols of Chicago, Illinois. She is also survived by one great-granddaughter, Ameila Mikiska, one brother Rex Norris of Asheville and her dear friend, Nancy Coffey.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Vollie Nichols, daughter Betsy Cranford, grandson Eric Cranford, sister Earlene McAninch and two sons-in-law, Fred Cranford and Jerry Burns.

A memorial service for Treva Norris Nichols will be held Friday afternoon, April 22, 2016 at 2:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Reverend Travis Suits and Reverend Gary Watson. A private interment will follow at Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon, from 12:30 until 2:00, prior to the memorial service, at Hampton Funeral Service.

Harry Stephen Hamilton (May 04, 1945 – April 17, 2016)

Harry Stephen Hamilton, known as Steve, age 70, of Shadowline Drive, Boone, passed away Sunday afternoon, April 17, 2016 at Caldwell Hospice in Lenoir. Steve was born May 4, 1945 in Boone. He received his BA degree in agriculture from Oklahoma State University and a degree in horticultural from Catawba Valley Community College. He served in the Vietnam war 1968-1970. For many years he was a well-respected Real Estate Broker in the High Country. He was a former member of the Boone Kiwanis club and volunteered many places such as Watauga Hospital and Red Cross.

BigHarry Stephen HamiltonSteve loved walking on the Greenway and at the Wellness Center, farming, golfing, and fishing. He also enjoyed his morning coffee, being outdoors, a good joke, conversations with friends and growing in his faith with his Faithbridge church family.

Steve is survived by his brother, Frank Hamilton and wife, Diana of Boone; nieces, Ranee Hamilton Myers of Asheville and Rev. April Hamilton Cranford and husband, Reed, of Fishersville, VA; and two great-nieces, River Grace Cranford and Haven Leigh Cranford. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Mish Hamilton, Jr. and Lorene Hamilton Parker.

Dorothy Norwood Arnett (Sept. 9, 1939 – April 17, 2016)

Dorothy Norwood Arnett, age 76, of Banner Elk passed away on April 17, 2016 at Charles A. Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville, NC.

A native of Avery County, she was born September 9, 1939 a daughter of the late Claude and Ruth Byers Norwood.

Dorothy was a member and Deaconess of the Banner Elk Seventh Day Adventist Church and a member of the Banner Elk Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She loved her family, paying particular attention to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to sew and read her Bible.

Along with her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her: husband, Ford Arnett, Sr. and a brother, Buddy Norwood.

Dorothy has left to cherish her memory her: daughters, Bonnie and Rick Norwood of Banner Elk, Missy and Wayne Miller of Banner Elk; son, Ford “Junior” and Cherri Arnett of Banner Elk; sisters, Betty and Mack Ramsey of Spruce Pine, Bonnie and Tim Horney of Banner Elk; brother, Homer and Linda Norwood of Granite Falls; grandson, Ryan and Brittany Arnett of Willow Springs, NC; granddaughters, Heather and Adam Breese of Clemmons, NC, Catie Arnett of Apex, NC, MacKenzie Miller of Banner Elk; great-grandchildren, Macy Arnett and Julianne Arnett, and two more on the way.

Funeral services for Dorothy Norwood Arnett will be conducted on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at 1:00 pm in the Banner Elk Seventh Day Adventist Church with the Revs. Kenneth Hodges and George Wright officiating. Interment will follow in the White Rock Cemetery. Mrs. Arnett will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the services on Wednesday. The family will receive friends from 6pm until 8 pm Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Arlo Duncan Carter (June 24, 1924 – April 16, 2016)

Arlo Duncan Carter, 91, of Linville Falls, N.C., and Callahan, Fla., passed away on April 16, 2016 at his residence.

He was born June 24, 1924 a son of the late Lorenzo Holt and Annie Dudley Carter.

Arlo was a member of the United States Army Air Corp and served during WWII in Italy with the 15th Air Force, 512 Squadron and the 376 Bomber Group where he was involved in 50 missions.

He worked for the USDA in Florida and retired as District Conservationist in Hernando County, Florida.

Along with his parents, Arlo was preceded in death by his children, Jenny C. Keith and Enid V. Carter.

Arlo has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Virginia Parrish Carter of the home; children, Steven E. Carter and wife Diana and Lynette M. Allen and husband Glen; 7 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren.

Louis Anthony DiBiase (Dec. 27, 1941
- April 15, 2016)

Louis Anthony DiBiase, age 74, of Poga Road, Butler, passed away Friday, April 15, 2016 at Watauga Medical Center.

3668663_wlppMr. DiBiase was born December 27, 1941 in Bronx, New York, a son of the late Joseph DiBiase and Antoinette Leone DiBiase. He was a retired restaurant owner. He was a member of Cornestone Summit Church.

Mr. DiBiase is survived by his wife, Joanne Rose Forte DiBiase of the home; one son, Joseph DiBiase of Butler, Tennessee; one daughter, Deborah Nardi and husband Joe of Sugar Grove; one sister, Donna DiBiase and Michael of Sugar Grove; and one sister-in-law, Sandra Costa of Boone.

He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Joseph DiBiase and Antoinette Leone DiBiase.

A Celebration of Life for Louis Anthony DiBiase will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, April 19, 2016 at 3:00 o’clock at Boone United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Reverend Reggie Hunt.

The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon, from 2:00 until 3:00 o’clock, at the church, one hour prior to the service.

John Brandon Eggers, Jr. (July 5, 1961 – April 15, 2016)

Rev. John B. Eggers, Jr., 54, proudly of Boiling Springs and Chesnee, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, April 15, 2016 at his residence.

3668189_wlppBorn July 5, 1961 in Watauga, County, NC, he was the loving husband to Betty Ragan Eggers for 33 years and the son of the late John Brandon Eggers, Sr. and Rachel Webster Eggers.

He was the founder and co-owner of Eggers Funeral Homes in Boiling Springs, Chesnee and Cliffside, NC.

After obtaining a Mortuary Science Degree from the Mid-America School of Mortuary Science, John embarked on his journey in the funeral profession starting at Hampton Funeral Service in Boone, NC before moving to Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home also in Boone, NC as part-owner. He later returned to Hampton Funeral Service before moving to South Carolina to manage Forest Lawn Mortuaries of Boiling Springs, Chesnee and Woodruff.

On January 2, 1996, John and his wife Betty began their own ministry in the funeral profession opening their first chapel in Boiling Springs, SC. He then went on to acquire Eggers Funeral Home and Crematory of Chesnee in 2001. He was appointed by the Governor to serve on the South Carolina Board of Funeral Service from 1998 to 2001. Most recently, John and his wife Betty undertook yet another funeral home, Eggers Funeral Home of Cliffside, NC to broaden their services they provide for the communities that have dedicated themselves to for over 20 years. One man’s mission lived out to his very end.

John was ordained as a Baptist Minister on June 15, 1986 and began pastoring Tabernacle Baptist Church. Once in SC, John was a long-time, faithful member of Green Point Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon, taught Sunday School Adult 4 Class, filled in for the pastor and served on many committees. He was a teacher at Casey Creek Bible College and served on the Board of Trustees of Limestone College. John was a member of the Boiling Springs Business Association, Lions Club of Boiling Springs, Boiling Springs Lodge #413, member of the Scottish Rite, member of the Hejaz Shrine and a past Patron of the Boiling Springs Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #283.

John loved his wife, his church, his church family, the funeral profession, his staff but above all, his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He will be greatly missed and most remembered for his charm, charisma, witty sense of humor and his constant compassion and encouragement shown to others.

In addition to his wife, Betty R. Eggers of the home, he is survived by his four legged children, Lucky and Charlie; his close friends, Tim and Rita Plummer and their son, Matthew; Cheryl Chastain, “NaNa,” Bill and Sherry Noble and their son Chase and the staff of the Eggers Funeral Homes.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at Eggers Funeral Home of Boiling Springs.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Eggers Funeral Home Chapel of Boiling Springs with Dr. David Lancaster, Dr. Jack Hames and Rev. Robert Buhl officiating. Burial will follow in Good Shepherd Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be Green Point Baptist Church, 1390 Rainbow Lake Rd., Inman, SC 29349.

James Stogner (Nov. 30, 1928 – April 13, 2016)

James Mack Stogner, 87, of Linville Falls passed away on April 13, 2016 at his residence.

James-Stogner-1460992688He was born November 30, 1928 in St. Pauls, NC, a son of the late Cary Ellis and Roxanne Baxley Stogner.

James was a graduate of St. Pauls High School and Emery Riddle Areonatical University in Miami and a member of the United States Coast Guard where he served with the Search and Rescue Team in Bermuda.

He worked for Nation Airlines and Pan Am. He loved working for the airline which he did for 34 years until he retired.

James enjoyed furniture building and wood working and was an avid boater.

Along with his parents, James was preceded in death by his: brother, Hilton Cary Stogner; sister, Marie Stogner Adcock.

James has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Dolly Collins Stogner of the home; sons, Neil Cameron of Linville Falls and Jeffrey Lewis Stogner of Dunnelon, FL.; grandson, Cody James Stogner of Davie, FL.; nephews, Michael Stogner of Statesville, NC and Harold Adjock of Fort Royal, NC.

A celebration of the life of James Mack Stogner will be conducted in Bermuda at a later date.

Brett Airey (Sept. 4, 1980 – April 13, 2016)

Brett Airey, age 35, of Durango, Colorado, formerly of Vilas, North Carolina, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at his home.

Brett was born September 4, 1980 in Downey, California, son of Dr. Steven Airey and Denise Debra Ittner Airey. He graduated from Appalachian State University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Appropriate Technology. He was a passionate advocate for environmental rights and protection, leading to his involvement in the solar farm industry. He was a talented lifelong musician and artist, utilizing his creativity to bring awareness to social injustices while imparting joy with his constant smile and laughter.

Brett is survived by his parents, Dr. Steven Airey and Denise Ittner Airey of Vilas, North Carolina; one sister, Quinn Ladd and husband Parke of Boone, North Carolina; two brothers, Shea Airey and wife Elizabeth of Tamassee, South Carolina and Juan Munoz-Airey and wife Diana of Medellin, Colombia, and three nieces, Cora and Asa Airey of Tamassee, South Carolina and Matilde Munoz-Airey of Medellin, Colombia.

Memorial services for Brett Airey will be conducted Thursday afternoon, April 21, 2016, at 2:00 o’clock, at Banner Elk Christian Fellowship.

Following the ceremony, the family will share in a celebration of Brett’s life at Banner Elk Christian Fellowship. All are welcome to come and share in this remembrance and celebration with us. Please wear bright colors to help us recall Brett’s positive energy, loving attitude and unbounded creativity.
