Shore Passes Away After Battling Devastating Disease for Several Years, Services Held Friday

By Jesse Wood

After battling idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a disease described as chronic, devastating and ultimately fatal, for several years, David Shore, 58, passed away on June 7 at his home in Banner Elk.

A lifelong resident of Watauga County, Shore is survived by his wife, Tina, daughter, Chelsey, father Bob and his wife, Jeanette, his sister, Janice and her husband Chris, and a number of nieces. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Jo Miller Shore.

Shore had a passion for bluegrass music. Learning to play just about anything with strings that resonated with the bluegrass, old-time and gospel sounds, Shore played with the Smokey Hollow Band and performed with Arbor Dale Presbyterian’s praise band every Sunday before he became too ill.

“David’s church family at Arbor Dale Presbyterian in Banner Elk … will attest that he will now, undoubtedly, be making a joyful noise of praise to his Lord with a distinctly Blue Ridge version of classic Bluegrass gospel,” Shore’s obituary reads.

Shore was known for having a big heart and caring for others. It was said that he would have been the first person to have helped someone if they were in his dire situation.

In a 2011 High Country Press article about a benefit to help the Shore family pay for the exorbitant health care costs for liver and lung transplants, Tina Shore talked about the kind of person her husband was:

“He’s one of those people who has a big heart…my husband just kind of quietly takes care of others,” she said at the time. “I’ve met so many of people [who have known him] over the years, and I’ve never heard but a kind word about him.

“In fact, we can’t go into Wal-Mart and get out because he always sees somebody that he knows, and he always stops to talk to them,” she added, laughing at the thought.

On Friday, June 12, at 7 p.m., a celebration of Shore’s life will take place at the Mount Vernon Baptist Church. The service will be officiated by Rev. Bud Russell.

Following the service, the family will receive friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 3505 Bamboo Road, Boone, North Carolina 28607 or to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, North Carolina 28645.
