Gayle Greer Beason, 72, of Heritage Drive, Boone, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 9, 2015, at her home.

Gayle was born Dec. 4, 1942 in Greer, South Carolina, daughter of the late Judd Greer, Jr. and Janet Underwood Greer Andrea . She was a homemaker and a member of Greenway Baptist Church. Gayle was devoted to her Sunday School class, children’s bible drill and church choir at Greenway Baptist Church.

Gayle is survived by her husband, Billy James Beason of the home; one daughter, Jennifer Brookshire and husband Brian of Winston-Salem; one son, Jeff Beason and wife Kate of Boone; one granddaughter, Morgan Andrea Brookshire; three grandsons, Tyler James Brookshire of Winston-Salem, Jonathan Blake Beason and Benjamin Scott Beason, both of Boone, and one step-sister, Donna Andrea of Brookhaven, New York.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, John Andrea.

Funeral services for Gayle Greer Beason will be conducted Wednesday morning, November 11, 2015, at 11:00 o’clock, at Greenway Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Darrell Hobbs and Reverend Harold Bennett. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

The family will receive friends Wednesday morning, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Juanita Younce Harmeyer, 88, of Roy Younce Road, Vilas, passed away Monday morning, November 9, 2015, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone.

Juanita was born September 23, 1927 in Johnson County, Tennessee, a daughter of the late Roy Lee Younce and Bradie Bunton Younce. She was a retired waitress. Juanita Harmeyer was a member of Mountain Dale Baptist Church. She loved to can her green beans, quilt blankets and go “grubbing” in her flowers. She had a great sense of humor and kept everyone laughing. To be honest, you just didn’t know what she would say and do. So many people loved her from Bethel, NC to Cincinnati, OH. She was like a Mother to so many of her children’s friends. She will be sorely missed.

The family wants to thank all the medical staff at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation and Watauga Medical Center for their excellent care for her.

Juanita is survived by three sons, Kenny P. Harmeyer and wife Janet of Fairfield, Ohio, Doug M. Harmeyer of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kevin Harmeyer of Boone; one daughter, Gale H. Perkins and husband Dale Stanaford of Goshen, Ohio; six grandchildren, Justin S. Perkins and wife Laura, Ashlee G. Perkins, Clinton M. Harmeyer, Amilia South and husband Thomas, Gabrielle Harmeyer, and Jasmine Harmeyer; seven great-grandchildren, Savannah and Branson Perkins, Owen Hines, Wyatt Harmeyer, Braley Harmeyer, Kylie South, and Ethan Bell, and three sisters, Alma Hurley of Melbourne, Florida, Ruby Taylor and husband Mark of Arlington, Tennessee, and Barbara Bartlett of Vilas. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Roy L. Younce and Bradie Bunton, she was preceded in death by one brother, Willie “Bill” Younce, and one sister, Dovie Y. Combs.

Funeral services for Juanita Younce Harmeyer will be conducted Friday afternoon, November 13, 2015, at 2:00 o’clock, at Mountain Dale Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Eric Cornett and Reverend Burl Greer. Burial will follow in the Bethel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the church, prior to the service.

Betty Jo H. Ervin (May 30, 1929 – Nov. 9, 2015)

Betty Jo Hefner Poovey Ervin, 86, of Conover, North Carolina, passed away on November 9th, 2015 at Life Care Rehabilitation Center in Banner Elk of natural causes.

Betty was born in Conover on May 30, 1929. She graduated from Oxford High School and continued her education with an accounting certification at Clevenger Business College in Hickory. Betty worked as a Bookkeeper for Catawba County Furniture Industries. She enjoyed reading most of all. She read hundreds of books. She loved to embroider and paint scenery.

Betty is survived by a daughter, Jann and husband Tom Kip, grandchildren, Matthew Turbeville and wife, Lana and Janna Turbeville Hamill and husband, Patrick of Nashville, Tennessee, stepsons, Christopher Kip and wife, Katherine and Matthew Kip and wife, Emily of Columbia, South Carolina. She was gifted with 3 great grandchildren Shane, Carsen and Marley and 8 step grandchildren, Sadie, Annabelle, Phoenix, Samuel, Morgan, Helen, Priscilla and Davy. Also surviving are sisters, Helen Bumgarner, Ruthie Laffon, Lucy Johnson and Vivian Sipe and one brother, Keith Hefner and other family and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents Charlie and Alice Hefner, an infant son, Stephen Joel Poovey, son-in-law, Allen Turbeville, sisters, Ruby Spencer, Katie Burris, Aileen Huffman and brother, Charlie Fred Hefner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, November 13, 2015, at St Peters Lutheran Church in Conover. Pastor Dennis Quackenboss of Mountainside Lutheran Church in Linville will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to St. Peters Lutheran Church Sunday School, 6175 St Peters Church Rd Conover, NC 28613.

Mrs. Grace Cole Vannoy, 80, of Turkey Knob Road, Boone, passed away Thursday afternoon, November 5, 2015 at Watauga Medical Center.

Born December 27, 1934 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late George Marshall and Bessie Miller Cole. Grace was a long time member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, where she served as the custodian for 40 years.

She was a member of the Red Hat Society and sang in the Hallelujah Choir. Grace exhibited a servants spirit toward all who knew her. She was a great example to her family, honoring Christ through her daily life.

Grace is survived by her husband of 60 years, Charles William Vannoy, four children, Richard Vannoy and wife Shelia of Boone, Terry Vannoy and wife Debra of Ormond Beach, Florida, David Vannoy and wife Donna of Boone, and Tweety VanHoose and husband Jeffrey of Boone, seven grandchildren; Vanessa and Natalie Vannoy, Dustin and Darren Vannoy, Samuel Vannoy and wife Ashley, Chaz and Chelsea VanHoose, four great grandchildren, William, Sofia, Kaden and Lyla Vannoy, three sisters, Beulah Crotts of Lenoir, Marie Brewer of Norfolk, and Virginia Spears of Lenoir, one brother, Alfred Cole of Lenoir. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Matthew Vannoy, and one sister, Annie Brewer.

Funeral services for Mrs. Grace Vannoy will be conducted Monday morning at 11 oclock at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Bud Russell, Rev. Greg Heisler, and Rev. David Vannoy. The body will lie in state at the church from 10 until 11 oclock. Burial will follow in the Vannoy Cemetery. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Vannoy Cemetery Fund, in care of Charles Vannoy, 123 Turkey Knob Road, Boone, NC 28607.

Mrs. Cordini was born November 23, 1942 in Wahoo, Nebraska, a daughter of the late Bohmeal Dvorak and Henrietta Novak Dvorak. She was a retired word processor for New River Mental Health, and was of the Baha’i’ Faith. 

Mrs. Cordini is survived by her husband, Carl Cordini of the home; one son, Justin Cordini and wife Melody Haven of Boone; one daughter, Jasmine Cordini and husband Bryan Collins of Jasper, Missouri; one grandson, Uriah Collins of Jasper, Missouri; and one brother, Gwayne Dvorak and wife Donna of Wahoo, Nebraska. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and burial for Mrs. Lorrie Jean Cordini will be conducted Saturday afternoon, November 7, 2015, at 1:00 o’clock at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

Zelma Shores Potter (July 21, 1935 – Nov. 4, 2015)

Zelma Shores Potter 80, of Todd, went home to be with her Savior that she loved all her life on Wednesday, November 4th at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation in Boone following a 10 year battle with Alzheimers. Zelma was born July 21, 1935 in the Tamarack community to Richard and Myrtle Shores. In addition to being a wife and mother, she worked at Shadowline, Blue Ridge Shoe, Carrolls Leather Goods and Ribbon Textiles.

Sweet Zelma was a beautiful lady and all who knew her could see that her life was centered on her Lord and Savior. She loved to sing gospel songs and attended many churches, always taking car loads of neighbors and children to church. Through her prayers and faith, many people were led to the Lord.

Zelma loved family and friends, always welcoming everyone into her home. She always made sure they were served a home cooked meal from her kitchen.

She loved visiting friends in hospitals and nursing homes, gardening and raising beautiful flowers.

When she became ill, Zelma moved to Deerfield Assisted Living where she sang to calm the residents with sun downers. Even in her struggles with the disease, God used her to encourage others suffering with Alzheimers through her songs.

Mrs. Potter is survived by her children, Mary Keplar and husband, Randy, of Boone, Jerry Potter and wife, Treva, of Holden Beach, Betty Hodges and husband, R.D. of Boone and Harold Potter of Mountain City; daughter-in-law, Thersia Potter of Todd; grandchildren, Rebecca Price of Boone, Ervin Potter of Todd, Alexus Potter of Todd, Chris Harmon of Banner Elk, Jason Harmon of Winston-Salem, Tanner Hodges and wife Beth and Elizabeth Hodges, all of Newport News, Va., and Ruby Hodges of Moscow, Idaho, Shaun Farthing and wife Cindy of Boone, Kathy Weaver and husband, Jim, of West Jefferson, and Teanna Setzer of Boone; great-grandchildren, Judson, Tate, Julia and Marie Hodges, Braydon Price, Logan Harmon, Chris and Brad Farthing, Robert Ward and Amber Hodges; and two sisters, Geneva Shelton of Vilas and Reba Potter of Sugar Grove. A number of special nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin Potter; son, Gary Wayne Whitey Potter; two sisters, Mary Snyder and Mandy Brown; brother, James Shelton; and son-in-law, Bob Farthing.

Funeral services for Zelma Potter will be conducted Saturday afternoon, November 7th, at 1 oclock, at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Pastor Kenneth Phipps and Rev. Herbert McCoy. The family will receive friends Saturday from 11:30 until 1 oclock, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Graveside services will follow in the Potter-Main Cemetery.

Mrs. Edna Bryan Miller, 88, of Moss Hill Road, Boone, passed away Wednesday morning, November 4, 2015 at the home of her daughter in Denver, North Carolina.

Mrs. Miller was born August 22, 1927 in Watauga County, a daughter of William Henry Bryan and Chaney Stanberry Bryan. She was a homemaker and a retired machine operator for IRC/TRW.

Mrs. Miller is survived by her husband, Hansford Miller of the home; one daughter, Audrey Townsend and husband Larry of Denver; two sons, Garry Miller, and Randall Miller and wife Angela of Boone; one daughter-in-law, Linda Miller of Asheville; five granddaughters, Alecia Saltzman of Denver, Lora Sigmon Hatley and husband Jeff of Denver, Chainey O’Herin and husband Thomas of Asheville, Miranda Warren and husband David of Vilas, and Neeley Ponder and husband Leland of Fletcher; one grandson, Bryan Miller and wife Lindsey of Winston Salem; eight great-grandchildren, William Saltzman, Kaitlyn and Bailey Sigmon, Gavin and Jane O’Herin, Briar Ponder, Drew and Landon Miller; one great-great-granddaughter, Lilly Saltzman; two special nieces, Clara Jones and Linda Money; and one special nephew, Bob Money. She is also survived by a number of additional nieces and nephews.

In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by her sisters Callie Bryan, Ella Johnson, Laura Day, Rosa Greene, Marie Beach, Belle Penley and an infant sister; her brothers Sherman, Leroy, Arlie and Earl Bryan; a grandson-in-law Jeff Saltzman, and a great-grandson, Callum O’Herin.

Funeral services for Edna Bryan Miller will be conducted Saturday afternoon, November 7, 2015 at 2:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:30 until 2:00. Officiating will be Reverend Bryan Miller and Reverend Doug Main. Burial will follow in the Meat Camp Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon, from 12:30 until 2:00, prior to the service, at Hampton Funeral Service.

William Dean South, 75, of US Highway 421 North, Vilas, passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at his home. Born September 19, 1940 in Watauga County, he was a son of Cody and Unabell Hodges South. Dean owned and operated Poplar Ridge Market in Trade, TN, and was well known as a champion pool player.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Judy Perry South; sons, Gary South of Mountain City and Anthony South of Vilas; grandchildren, Tenisha and Laiken South, and great-granddaughter, Sheylin Reese, all of Mountain City; sisters, Shirley Moody and her daughter, Carolyn South of Deep Gap, and Juliana Hayes and husband, Ronnie, of Sugar Grove; brothers, Bob South and wife, Candy, of Dallas, NC, Gary Bill South of Branson, MO, Jessie South and wife, Peggy, of Zionville, and George South of Concord; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Ann South; brothers, Wayne South and infant Frank; and sisters, Bernice Carroll and infant Alice.

As Dean requested, services will be private.
