Roy Jones, 73, of Newland, the Lick Log Community, passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Carl and Maude Hughes Jones.

Roy loved spending time with his family and picking music. He was known for just bursting out into a song and leading family and friends in those songs. There was never a project or repair that he would not take on. No one could tell a joke quiet like Roy. He retired as a Truck Driver after many years with Dellinger Nursery.

A loving husband, father, and Big Papa, he leaves behind to cherish his memory: his wife, Patricia Silver Jones of the home; daughters, Carol Smith, and her husband, Garrick, of Banner Elk, Christa Poore, and her husband, Sam, of Pineola, Carla Jones Guinn of Lick Log, Deanna Griffith, and her husband, Glenn, of Newland, Misty Henson, and her husband, Chad, of Canton, GA; grandchildren: Tyne Franklin, and her husband, Jeremy, of Lick Log, Hannah Guinn of Newland, Tyler Phillips of Holden Beach, Zack Guinn of Hampton, TN, Eli Jones of Canton, GA; great granddaughters, Irelyn, Addison, and Ayleigh; his mother-in-law, Geraldine Silver of Burnsville; sister in law, Iva Lee Garland of Newland; Brother in law Philip Simmons of Burnsville and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Title Hughes, Ruth Simmons; and his brothers, Ray Hughes, Newt and Creed Jones.

Funeral services for Roy Jones will be conducted at 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2015 from the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Lonnie Barnes and Rev. Glen Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until the service hour Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be held at 11 Friday morning in the Jones Family Cemetery.

Ronald Gerard Singler, Sr., 66, of Vilas, passed away Monday morning, June 29, 2015, at his home.

Ronald is survived by one son, Ron Singler, Jr. and wife Katherine of Bartow, Florida; one daughter, Sissy Singler of Lakeland, Florida; four brothers, Ed Singler and wife Cathy of Lakeland, Larry Singler and wife B.B. of Orlando, Florida, John “Pugsley” Singler and wife Cyndi Terry of Lakeland, and Kenny Singler and wife Lisa of Owings, Maryland; two step-daughters, Jackie Allbritton and husband Kevin of Geneva, Florida, and Erin Henson of Orlando; six grandchildren, Cole and Isabella Singler of Bartow, Brianna Hodges of Geneva, Coral Staggs of Orlando, and Carson Miller of Orlando; two nephews, Brian Singler of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Michael Singler of Orlando, and two nieces, Siera Singler of Manorville, New York, and Brooke Singler of Owings.

A private Celebration of Life will be held by the family.

Maude H. Luttrell (Dec. 25, 1921 – June 28, 2015)

Maude Hollars Luttrell, 93, formerly of Shulls Mills, Road, Boone, passed peacefully on June 28, 2015 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation surrounded by her family, the wonderful staff of Glenbridge, and special friend and roommate, Juanita Wilson.

Born Dec. 25, 1921 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Cleveland and Hattie Cook Hollars. Maude lived most of her life in the Shull’s Mills community where she and her late husband, Charles, raised their family. A true nature lover, she loved all outdoor activities. Maude never met a stranger and was always there to offer a helping hand anyone in need. Gardening was a major part of her life. She prepared great meals from the bounty of her gardens for family and friends, and made sure no one left her home hungry. She loved her music, especially listening to gospel and country music. The entire Luttrell family knows that she is in a better place in Heaven and offers a special ‘Thank You’ to all our family, friends and caregivers for contributing to her care.

Mrs. Luttrell is survived by her children, Judy Church of Taylorsville, Ann Allen of Newton, Rebecca Luttrell of West Jefferson, Kirk Luttrell of Deming, New Mexico, Rick Luttrell and wife, Terri, of Newland, and Jane Poole and husband, Don, of Wake Forest; Fourteen grandchildren; and her daughter-in-law, Donna Luttrell of Linville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ray Luttrell; son, James Edward Luttrell; and daughter, Ina Sue Horowitz.

Memorial services will be conducted Thursday, July 2, at 7 p.m. at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Ken Harper. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 until 7 p.m., one hour prior to services, at Austin & Barnes.

Lena M. Glenn (Nov. 7, 1929 – June 28, 2015)

Lena Matheson Glenn, 85, of Rush Branch Road, Sugar Grove, passed away Sunday afternoon, June 28, 2015 at her home.

Born Nov. 7, 1929 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Ross and Rosa Cook Matheson. Mrs. Glenn was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. As a housewife and homemaker, Lena loved her family, especially preparing home cooked meals from the canned goods harvested from the garden. She enjoyed quilting and embroidering in her spare time.

Mrs. Glenn is survived by three sons, David and Kenneth Glenn, both of the home, and Dennis Ray Glenn of Granite Falls; three daughters, Levita Hicks and husband, Dennis, of Sugar Grove, Libby Trivett and husband, James, of Vilas, and Lisa Walters and husband, Scott, of Churchill, Tenn.; nine grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Juanita Smith of Boone, Betty Jo Cable of Sugar Grove, and Shelby Cannon and husband, Herman, of Vilas. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Glenn; one daughter, Linda Wilcox; three grandchildren, Kim and Beverly Wilcox, Talbert Hicks; her parents; and six brothers.

Funeral services for Lena Matheson Glenn will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, June 30, at 2 o’clock, at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Sam Lawson. The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 1 until 2 o’clock, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Graveside services will follow at the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Formerly of 107 Zeb Street in Boone, Mildred C. Small passed away peacefully at Life Care Center of Banner Elk on Sunday evening at age 82. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil L. Small; mother, Ferrie Gragg Clawson; father, Lee Clawson; twin sister, Ruth Clawson Lewis; brother-in-law, Bob Lewis; and nephew, Wayne Lewis.

She is survived by her babies, her beloved cats: Sadie, Tiger, and Buddy; niece and caregiver Betty Lou Wells and niece Rosalee Norris and husband Melvin, all of Boone; first cousins: Samuel Austin Moretz and wife Carol; Barbara M. Moretz and husband John; and primary caregivers Jerry C. Moretz and wife Nancy, all of Boone, and Garry G. Moretz and wife Bobbie of Petersburg, VA.

Mildred retired from TRW after which she worked for some time at Roses and K-Mart. She volunteered for a number of years at Watauga Hunger Coalition and for decades at the Animal Hospital of Boone.

Funeral services for Mildred Small will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2pm at Austin and Barnes Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Laura Weant officiating. The body will lie in state and family will received friends from 12:30-2:00. Entombment will be at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens Mausoleum.

The family respectfully requests no food or flowers. Memorials may be made to Animal Hospital of Boone, 2773 Highway 105, Boone, NC 28607, who kept and cared for her cats the past 19 months after Mildred was no longer able to stay at home or to the Activities Fund at Life Care Center of Banner Elk, 185 Norwood Hollow Road, Banner Elk, NC 28604, where Mildred resided and received excellent care the past few months.

Charlotte “Charlie” Elizabeth Bowman Johnson of Clarkston, Georgia passed away on June 28, 2015.

Charlie was a Christian of great faith, a humble warrior of the Lord Jesus who set an example for all who knew her. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Brenda Carol Sessions (m. Randy Sessions), Jo Anne Johnson; granddaughters, Michelle Sessions, Tasha Reid, Crystal Floyd (m. Daniel Floyd) and great granddaughter, Sadie Floyd.

Funeral services for Charlotte”Charlie” Johnson will be conducted on Thursday, July 2 at 11 a.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Kathy Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in the Johnson Cemetery.

Mr. Mackie H. Watson, age 82, of Deep Gap, passed away Thursday evening. Mackie was a retired chicken farmer, sawmiller, and who owned and operated Watson’s Fruit Stand. He was very well known for his generosity and thoughtfulness to others.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ode and Texie Greene Watson, and a sister, Margaret Greene.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Watson; a son, Donnie Watson of Deep Gap; a niece, Libby and husband Dennis Winebarger of Deep Gap; and a nephew, Billy and wife Terry Blevins of West Jefferson.

Funeral services for Mackie H. Watson will be conducted Sunday, June 28, 2015 at 3 p.m. in the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service time.

Mary Lee H. Combs (March 8, 1928 – June 25, 2015)

Mary Lee Harmon Combs, beloved mother, sister, grandmother and aunt, age 87, of Laurel Creek Road, Sugar Grove, peacefully went to be with the Lord, Thursday, June 25, 2015.

Mary Lee was born in the Laurel Creek community of Watauga County, third child of Garnett and Maude Mast Harmon. Mary Lee was a member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church and most recently attended Piney Grove Baptist Church on Rominger Road, were she loved to sing and praise the Lord. In 1992, after 22 years of service, Mary Lee retired from Watauga Medical Center where she worked in the housekeeping department. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, listening to books on tape provided by the NC Commission for the Blind, and gospel music.

She is survived by two children: Thomas Raleigh Combs of Sugar Grove and Nancy Mixon and husband Clark of Mountain City, Tenn.; one grandson: Garrett Mixon and wife, Meghan of Zionville and one cherished great-grandson: Abram Roy Mixon; two dear sisters: Addie H. Maynard of Sugar Grove, formerly of Jamestown, and Georgia H. Ward of Sugar Grove; one sister-in-law: Marie Harmon of Vilas; special nieces and nephews: Mary Accetta Trivette and husband Marvin of Banner Elk, Michael Accetta of West Jefferson, Chris Harmon of Vilas, three great-nieces: Stephanie Trivette Platt and husband Josh, Jennifer Dugger and Opal Accetta, two great-nephews: Daniel Accetta and Brandon Trivette and one precious great-great-niece: Aubrey Ann Platt; and, special caregiver and dear friend, Sharon McCurry of Sugar Grove.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Ruby Harmon Accetta, one brother, William (Bill) Harmon, two brother-in-laws, Joseph Maynard and Glenn Ward, and great nephew Justin Accetta.

Funeral service for Mary Lee Harmon Combs will conducted at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 28th at Piney Grove Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. David Testerman and Rev. Richard Trivette. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, from 3 until 4 p.m., prior to the service, at the church. Graveside service will follow the 4:00 p.m. service in the Piney Grove Community Cemetery.

Colin B. Batchelor (Oct. 25, 1924 – June 25, 2015)

Mr. Colin Brown Batchelor, Jr., Jim was born in Toronto, Canada to Colin B. Batchelor, Sr. and Jemima Dawson and grew up in Keego Harbor, near Pontiac, Mich.

Jim was a District Manager of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. For many years he played softball across the country and in Europe after World War II. He was in the Third Armored Infantry and fought under General Patton and in all the major battles from D-Day to Berlin.

Surviving are his sons: Dr. Brad Batchelor and Dr. Dan Batchelor; daughter-in-law, Marina Batchelor, granddaughter Asha Batchelor; sisters: Jean Golding, Mary Winters and Betty Howell.

Services will be August 29, 2015 in Michigan.
