Betty A. Hunter (May 08, 1927 – April 28, 2015) 

Mrs. Betty Austin Hunter, 87, of Boone, passed away Tuesday morning, April 28, 2015 at Watauga Medical Center.

Born May 8, 1927 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of the Collis Monroe and Roxie McNeil Austin. Betty received her under graduate and graduate degrees from UNC Greensboro. She later taught home economics at Durham Senior High School, the University of North Carolina, Greensboro and Arizona State University in Tempe Arizona. She was a member of University Presbyterian Church in Tempe, Arizona.

She is survived by one son, Clyde A. “Al” Hunter, III and wife Mary of Severna Park, Maryland, three grandchildren; Clyde Alma Hunter, IV and wife Stephanie of Sanford, Steven Hunter and Samantha Hunter both of Severna Park, Maryland, t great grandchildren, Lillian and Jacob Hunter, two sisters, Martha Austin Hass and Minnie Austin Snead and husband Bob of Boone, and one brother, Bill Austin and wife Peggy of Boone.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Alma Hunter, Jr., one sister, Mary Austin Graham, and two brothers, Clyde and Collis Austin.

Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Austin Hunter will be conducted Friday afternoon, May 1, 2015 at 3 o’clock at the Mount Lawn Mausoleum. Officiating will be Rev. Jeff McClain. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Herbert R. Garland (April 05, 1933 – April 27, 2015) 

Mr. Herbert Rheiner Garland, 82, of Sorrento Forrest Drive, Blowing Rock, passed away Monday afternoon, April 27, 2015 at Watauga Medical Center.

Gladys Irene Harmon (June 25, 1932 – April 24, 2015)

Mrs. Gladys Irene Harmon, 82, of 173 Memory Tree Lane, Sugar Grove, passed away Friday evening, April 24, 2015 at Watauga Medical Center.

Mrs. Harmon was born June 25, 1932 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Roscoe Clifford Harmon and Cazzie Trivette Harmon. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church. Irene was known for her beautiful gardens, her quilting and craft skills, and her kindness and love for her “adopted children.”

Mrs. Harmon is survived by her husband, Bobby R. Harmon, of the home; one daughter, Charlene Harmon, of the home; two sisters, Viola H. Harmon of Buffalo, New York and Mary Katherine Tester, of Sugar Grove; and two brothers, Clifford Harmon of Sugar Grove and Chester Harmon and wife Gail of Banner Elk. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Opal Combs.

A memorial service for Mrs. Gladys Irene Harmon will be conducted Thursday morning, April 30, 2015, at 10:00 o’clock, at Faith Missionary Baptist Church. Officiating will be Reverend Richard Trivette.

Dewitt T. Brown, Jr. (Jan. 1, 1930 – April 23, 2015) 

T. Brown, Jr., 85, of Boone, passed away Thursday morning, April 23, 2015 at Watauga Medical Center.

BigBrown, DT -1Born Jan. l, 1930 in the Cove Creek community, he was a son of Dewitt T. Brown, Sr. and Bessie Moody Brown. D. T. grew up in his father’s garage in Cove Creek, now the historical landmark named Dewitt T. Brown Garage Museum.

In l947, he and his brother Paul established, and operated Brown Brothers Construction Company for decades. D. T. always had a love for rebuilding cars and machinery, and in his spare time, enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens. Mr. Brown will be remembered as a successfully businessman who contributed to and supported his community.

He is survived by his children, Shelia Ann Brown, and companion, Lee Hildebrand, of Hickory, Blake Brown of Boone, and Ingrid Brown of Zionville; grandchildren, Tiffanie Skeens Durrence and Lacie Skeens Gibbs and husband, Patrick, all of Glennville, Ga.; great grandchildren, Hayleigh Ann Durrence, Layton Lee Gibbs, and Kennedy Grace Durrence, all of Glennville, Ga. Numerous nieces and nephews, and his special family friend, Jane also survive. He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul G. Brown, sisters, Billie Brown Sutherland and Josephine Brown Bingham.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, April 25, at 2 p.m. at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Minister Gordon Noble. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 1 until 2 oclock, at Austin & Barnes. Masonic graveside service, provided by the Snow Lodge #363, will follow at Cove Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Edgar Lee Joines (August 9, 1930 – April 19, 2015)

Mr. Edgar Lee Joines, 84, of Kalmia Lane, Boone, passed away Sunday morning, April 19, 2015, at Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living in Boone.

Mr. Joines is survived by his wife, Mary Allison Joines of the home; one daughter, Pamela Mast Dewar and husband Doug of Banner Elk, and one grandson, Jason Daniel Little and wife Samantha of Orlando, Florida. He is also survived by other extended family, one niece and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Iver Lee Joines and Beulah Mae Rogers Joines, and one brother, Cecil Joines.
