Norma Holtsclaw Shook (Oct. 29, 1926 – Sept. 7, 2014)

Norma Holtsclaw Shook, 87, of Roan Mountain, formerly of Elk Park, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014 at the Roan Highlands Nursing Center.

A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Elizabeth Hollis Holtsclaw.

She was a home and the widow of the late Charles Shook, who passed away in 1991.

Clarence Albert Dean (Dec. 27, 1924 – Sept. 4, 2014)

Clarence Albert Dean, 89, of Newland passed away on Sept. 4, 2014 at Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Avery County, he was born Dec. 27, 1924 a son of the late John and Addie Gragg Dean.

He was a member of the U.S Navy where he served during WWII, worked for 47 years as a Truck Driver for Underwood and also drove a couple of years for Andrews Nursery.

Along with his parents, Clarence was preceded in death by his: wife, Irma Dean; brothers, Mose Dean, Rev. Earnest Dean, Charlie Pyatte, Ralph Pyatte; sisters, Irene McCracken, Florence Beetle, Goldie Pyatte, Frances Dean, Jessee Johnson, Sarah Carroll; granddaughter, Shannon Dean.

Clarence has left to cherish his memory his: children, Dottie Webster and husband Lee of Wilkesboro, Bette Campbell and husband Charles of Johnson City, Tenn., Eddie Dean and wife Gail of Newland, Billy Dean and wife Carol of Newland; nine grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Clarence Albert Dean will be conducted on Sunday, September 7th at 4:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ with Brother Dave Atkins and Brother Jack Dykes officiating. Graveside services will follow in the Church of Jesus Christ Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the service hour at the church.

Benny Gale Benfield, 79, of Buck Hill Road in Newland, the Pyatte community, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014 at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.

Benny was born on Oct. 15, 1934 in Avery County and was the son of the late Nettie Benfield. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Jo Benfield who passed away in 1999. He was a member of the Buck Hill Presbyterian Church and was retired from Henredon Furniture of Spruce Pine.

Left to cherish his memories are his daughter; Linda McKinney and husband,; Maynard of Buck Hill; his sons; Benny Ray Benfield and wife, Dianne of Benfield Road; and James Benfield and wife, Lori of Sugar Mountain ; his grandchildren; Maynard D. Mckinney, Michael McKinney and wife, Mollie, Mitchell McKinney and wife, Melinda, Amanda McKinney, Tabitha Benfield, Travis Benfield, Shannon Greene and husband, Chucky, and Amber Brown and husband, Gerald; his great grandchildren; Melania, Micah, Holden, Mindy, Lane, Carly, Ashley, Malley, Madeline, and Ivy; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Julie Benfield, Elizabetgh Rice and husband, Mike, and Wade Thompson and wife, Cindy; several nieces and nephews.

The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at the funeral service honoring the life of Mr. Benny Gale Benfield on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with the Rev’s Wallace Wise and Jim Hoilman officiating. Interment will follow in the Benfield Cemetery. A time to receive friends, share memories and support the family will be held from 12 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014 in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home.

Lonnie Gene Ellis (July 10, 1936 – Sept. 2, 2014)

Gene Ellis, 78, of the Foscoe Community passed away on Sept. 2, 2014 at his residence.

He was born July 10, 1936 a son of the late Lonnie Geter and Daisy Mae Long Ellis.
