Marjorie K. Bumbaugh (Sept. 19, 1920 – March 21, 2016)

Marjorie Louise Karl Bumbaugh, 95, passed away March 21, 2016. Born September 19, 1920, in Harrisburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Karl and Gertrude Lavanture Karl.

BigBumbaugh, Marjorie 1At age 6 she went to the Quincy Orphanage sponsored by the United Brethren Church. Marjorie was a graduate of Quincy High School and Harrisburg Beauty School. In 1953, she and her family moved to Boone, NC. She was employed by the ASU Bookstore as a cashier, retiring after thirty years of service.

Prior to her declining health, Marjorie was a faithful and active member of the First Baptist Church of Boone. She served as treasurer of her Sunday School class, a member of the Joy Circle and the Senior Adult Choir. Her love of the church, music and people never waned.

Her survivors include one brother, Jack Karl and wife, Ginny of Oberlin-Steelton, PA; two sons, Jerry Bumbaugh and wife Renee, of Shelby, NC, Billy Karl and wife, Mary, of San Francisco, CA; special friends, Phyllis Shore Bumbaugh and Betty Reary; five grandchildren: Felicia B. Yarboro and husband Jonathan, Kristin B. Espinosa and husband Santiago, Lavinia Karl, Luke Karl, and Lillian Karl; three great grandchildren, Katherine Yarboro, Isabella Espinosa and Cristavo Espinosa; and five nieces.

A celebration of her life will be conducted Friday, March 25, 2016 at 2:00 in the Chapel of Austin and Barnes Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Music Ministry, 375 West King Street, Boone, NC 28607 or to Medi Home Health & Hospice, 400 Shadowline Drive, Suite 102, Boone, NC 28607.

Howard W. Cable (May 4, 1921 – March 21, 2016)

BigCable, HowardHoward Woodrow Cable, 94, of Rush Branch Road, Sugar Grove, passed away Monday, March 21, 2016 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation. Born May 4, 1921 in Watauga County, he was a son of William Lee and Sean Johnson Cable. Howard was a long time active member of Antioch Baptist Church where he served as a past Sunder School Superintendent and a member of the church choir. He raised tobacco and cattle on the family farm. One of Howard’s favorite past time was fox hunting with his dogs.

Mr. Cable is survived by his sister, Hazel Farthing and husband, Edmond, of Vilas; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Patsy Mize Cable; sisters, Lena Edmisten and Dosha Wilson; brothers, Frank, Dwight, Spencer and Hal Cable; half-sister, Grace Johnson; and half-brother, Jim Cable.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 2 PM, at Antioch Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Daniel Lawrence. The family will receive friends Thursday from 12:30 until 2 o’clock, prior to services, at the church. Graveside services will follow in the Cable-Matheson Family Cemetery.

Carol J. Gross (July 22, 1928 – March 21, 2016)

Dr. Carol Jacobs Gross, age 87, of Bamboo Road, Boone, passed away Monday evening, March 21, 2016, at Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care in Lenoir.

3637576_wlppCarol was born July 22, 1928 in Albany, New York, a daughter of the late Avrom Meyer Jacobs and Rhea Fisher Jacobs. She was a retired Department of Social Work Professor at Appalachian State University, and a member and past president of Temple of the High Country in Boone.

Carol is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Gross of West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and Jennifer Gross of Chicago, Illinois; one grandson, Benjamin Gross of West Stockbridge, and one sister, Eleanor Goldman of Plattsburg, New York. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, David Gross.

Memorial services for Dr. Carol Jacobs Gross will be conducted Friday morning, March 25, 2016, at 11:00 o’clock, at Temple of the High Country. Officiating will be Rabbi Stephen Roberts. Graveside services and burial will be held Thursday, March 31, 2016, at 10:30 AM in Beth Emeth Cemetery in Loudonville, New York.

Nell Brewer Taylor (Nov. 19, 1921 – March 20, 2016)

Nell Brewer Taylor, age 94, of Newland passed away on March 20, 2016 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

Nell-Taylor-1458633886A native of Avery County, she was born November 19, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Wallace Blaine Brewer and Rosa Oaks Brewer.

She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening, flowers, reading and spending time with her family.

Along with her parents, Nell was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Taylor; son, John Frank Taylor; daughter, Barbara Daniels; brother, Tom Brewer; and sister, Della Casamassima.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Thomas Taylor, Sr. and wife Sheila of Newland, Douglas Taylor and wife JoAnn of Elk Park; sister, Lucy Howell of Valdese; brother, Alfred Brewer and wife Teresa of Concrete, WA; nine grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Nell Brewer Taylor will be conducted on Wednesday, March 23rd at 6:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Greene and Dr. Phil Murdock officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until the service hour. Interment will be on Thursday, March 24th at 11:00 a.m. in the Ledford Cemetery.

John Harold Norris (March 25, 1928 – March 19, 2016)

John Harold Norris, age 87, of Glenbridge, and formerly of Brairwood Lane, Boone, passed away Saturday morning, March 19, 2016 at Watauga Medical Center. Born March 25, 1928 in Watauga County, he was a son of Willard and Edna Norris. John was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church in Mill Creek. John was a cattle and chicken farmer. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved animals, but in particularly, his dogs.

Mr. Norris is survived by four sisters, Mary Helen Vaughn and husband, Jerry, of Boone, Emma Norris Ivey and Wilma Norris Allen, both of Greensboro, and Ruby Norris Moretz of Boone. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Houck Norris; brothers, Wendell and Doyle Norris; and his parents, Willard and Edna Norris.

Memorial services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, March 23, 2016, at 2 oclock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Billy Norris. The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 1 until 2 oclock, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes. Graveside services will be at a later date.

She was born September 29, 1945 in Carter County, TN. a daughter of the late Henry and Sallie Hopson Elliott.

Edith was of the Baptist faith and worked as a CNA.

Along with her parents, Edith was preceded in death by her: sister, Frankie Lee Elliott; brothers, Wayne Elliott, Ernest Elliott, Paul Elliott, Claude Elliott, Jim Elliott.

Edith has left to cherish her memory her: daughters, Linda Stevens and husband Tony of Roan Mountain, TN., Patricia Shook and husband Eddie of Newland, Diana Potter of Roan Mountain, TN.; grandchildren, Jessica Rahn and husband Gregg, Jennifer Burleson and husband Wayne, Joshua Harrison, Jonathan Harrison, Nicole Birchfield and husband Brandon, Maranda Nussbaum and husband Brian; great grandchildren, Tucker, Savannah, Vanessa, Elijah, Destiny, Charity, Kadence, Devon; special friend, Gary Banner of 23 years; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 18th at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Family, friends and pallbearers will meet at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home on Saturday, March 19th at 2:00 p.m. to go in procession to Montezuma Cemetery for graveside services with Pastor Joshua Calvert and Rev. David Sosbee officiating.

Elizabeth (Betsy) Feather Haibach, 62, of Donnies Drive, Boone, passed away Friday afternoon, March 18, 2016 at her home.

BigHaibach, ElizabethBetsy was born August 21, 1953 in Orlando, Florida. She was a member of Alliance Bible Fellowship in Boone. Hers was a life of faithful service. She humbly and joyfully served her husband, children, church, and her Lord. Psalms 73: 23-26 ….(My flesh and my heart may fail: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion forever).

Mrs. Haibach is survived by her husband, Dr. Peter J. Haibach; daughters, Katherine Haibach Conners and husband, Sav, of Malden, Mass. and Emily Haibach and fiancé, Kyle Wissing, of Winston-Salem; her mother, Gayle Feather of Deland, Fl.; sisters, Jane Alayan and husband, Mustafa, of White Plains, NY and Amy Feather of Vienna, Va.; brothers, Dan Feather and wife, Paula, of Floyd, Va., and Jonathan Feather and wife, Esther, of Charlotte; and sister-in-law, Jeanne Bostick and husband, Donnie, of Chickamauga, Ga. Five nieces and five nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her father, Merlin Feather.

Memorial services will be conducted Monday, March 21, 2016 at 2 PM at the Alliance Bible Fellowship, officiated by Pastor Scott Andrews. The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 1 until 2 oclock at the church.

Mr. Kenneth Francis Pope, age 78, of Laurel Branch Road, Vilas, passed away Thursday evening, March 17, 2016 at the Blowing Rock Rehabilitation and Davant Extended Care Facility.

popeMr. Pope was born December 13, 1937, a son of the late Albert Fredrick Pope, Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth Walrath Pope.

Mr. Pope is survived by five daughters, Wendy Nickl of New Jersey, Tammy Decker of Cape May, New Jersey, Jill McCrae of Durham, North Carolina, Heidi Michelsen of Vilas, and Jaymie Babcock of Franklin, New Jersey; three brothers, Donald Pope of Westfield, New York, Bob Pope of New York, and John Pope of New York, and four sisters, Mary Wilson of Rome, New York, Joan Race of Independence, Virginia, Ruthie Pope of Vermont, and Elaine Cory of Colorado.

He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth White Pope; his father and mother, Albert Fredrick Pope, Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth Walrath Pope; and a great-granddaughter, Lilyana.

A memorial service for Mr. Kenneth Francis Pope will be conducted Wednesday morning, March 23, 2015 at 11:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be son-in-law Michael McCrae and daughter Jill McCrae.

The family will receive friends following the service at Hampton Funeral Service.
