July 1, 2014. Unlike last year, those living and visiting the High Country weren’t signing “Rain, Rain, Go Away” with their kids all month of June.

It has only rained 2.48 inches in Boone last month compared to the 7.2 inches of rain that the county seat and home of Appalachian State University received in June 2013. And an inch of that 2.48 inches came in the last few days of the month.

Last year, the State Climate Office of North Carolina reported that June 2013 was the second wettest June on record in the state since 1895.

The weeks that followed that June were even wetter. In July 2013, Boone received 19.7 inches of rainfall, which was the most precipitation for July on record (dating back to 1929), according to archives compiled at RaysWeather.com.

“The only other time I know of Boone exceeded 20 inches in any month was that infamous September in 2004,” Ray’s Weather Center noted last year, referring to hurricanes Ivan, Francis and Jeanne
