June 1, 2012. Have you ever hiked a trail and wondered how it got there or who maintains it? Well your days of wonder are over…join a park ranger and help to fix a section of trail on the profile trail in Grandfather Mountain State Park. No experience or tools are needed as the park will supply these things.
What you will need are sturdy closed-toe shoes (no flip flops or sandal style shoes are permitted), work gloves (leather preferred), comfortable work clothes, snacks and beverage (non-alcoholic). Additional items you may want include are bug spray, sunscreen, rain jacket, etc.
Work can include any of the following: digging up roots and or soil, moving small or large rocks, erosion control, building rock wall and other tasks similar in nature. This is a fun environment to work in and a great way to give back to the area you hike in.
