5pm-10pm. Oyster Roast. Steamed, Fried or Raw, Oyster Roasts are back at Lost Province! Join us the first Tuesday of each month for a you-shuck oyster roast. We’ve got $12 buckets with 12 oysters, house made saltine crackers and all the fixin’s! 

 

Wednesday November 07

7pm-9pm Trivia Night: Beginning at 7pm, Lost Province will be hosting Trivia Night. Compete on your own or on a team! The competition gets started at 7pm so come a little early for a pizza and a pint and get your seat!

College Night and $3.00 Thursday-$3.00 pints on all Lost Province brewed beers (except high gravity).

7:30-Close Live Music: Alba agus Eireann (Scotland and Ireland). Alba agus Eireann is a Celtic band that has its origins at Appalachian State University. The band covers a variety of music in the Celtic genre from the traditions of Scotland, Ireland and some old-time crossover tunes. This music is sure to get at foot tapping and bring the Gael out in everyone. Featuring John Carson on Guitar and Shane Watson on Fiddle.

7:30pm-Closing Live Music: Maureen Renihan Jazz Trio. Maureen Renihan is a Boone based vocalist performing throughout the high country, piedmont and foothill regions of North Carolina. Influenced by great icons such as Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, and Ella Fitzgerald, Maureen sets a nostalgic tone with her soothing vocals and sincere delivery. With an ever expanding repertoire and theatrical background of over twenty years, Maureen possesses the creativity and versatility to delight audiences of all ages. Accompanied by some of the finest jazz musicians in the region, Maureen Renihan & Friends perform classic jazz standards, familiar show tunes, and jazz interpretations of popular music.

Teachers Win Bright Ideas Grants from Blue Ridge Energy

Boone, North Carolina (December 5, 2016) – Exciting, hands-on learning projects are coming to local classrooms thanks to $6,665 in Bright Ideas grants awarded recently by Blue Ridge Energy to local educators during a special luncheon honoring winning teachers and their principals.

 

Bright Ideas is an academic grants program sponsored by Blue Ridge Energy in conjunction with North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation and its 26 other member electric cooperatives that helps further innovative scholastic learning projects that go beyond available school funding.

 

Watauga County grant winners are:

 

  • Heather Miller of Parkway Elementary School for “Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading: Integrating Science and Literacy.” A grant of $725 will help Parkway third graders with the essential understating of the science curriculum and inquiry-based thinking while also building critical literacy skills.

 

  • Emily Green of Green Valley Elementary School for “Fueling Interest to Create 21st Century Learners.” This $1,182 grant will be used to help provide more hands-on interaction with building and programming of robots. 

 

  • Patricia Pfister of Cove Creek Elementary for “From Egg to Chick.This $855 grant will be used to purchase two incubators and needed supplies to incubate, hatch and house chicks, teaching science students about the life cycle of the chicken. 

 

  • Sherri Hale of Valle Crucis Elementary School for “Maker Space for Middle School.” This $1,085 grant will be used to help promote creativity, problem solving and creative thinking in the class as students work with materials on hand, individually and collaboratively, to solve real world problems.

 

  • Clint Byers of Two Rivers Community School for “Middle School Ecology Lab.” This $1,194 grant will be used to study water, water ecology, and waterways along a stretch of the New River and a tributary.

 

From Avery County, the winners are:

  • Robert E. Tufts of Cranberry Middle School for “Sea Perch Underwater ROV. This $716 grant will be used for materials to help students build an underwater robotics program that teaches basic science concepts with a marine engineering theme.

 

  • Kim Duncan of Avery Middle School for “AMS Drama Club,” a $500 grant to help revive the performance arts at Avery Middle School and the newly formed “Panther Players.”

 

  • Lane Worrell of Cranberry Middle School for “Fiber Arts Around the World.” This $408 grant will help students create one of a kind textiles, yarn paintings and dream catchers while learning social studies as students study diverse cultures.

 

 

Blue Ridge Energy received 62 applications for the 2016-2017 school year from schools in its service area of Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, Wilkes and Avery counties. Funds totaling $20,100 were awarded to 24 classrooms to benefit hundreds of local students. 

To date, Blue Ridge Energy has awarded more than $426,000 in Bright Ideas classroom grants that has impacted thousands of local students and teachers. Blue Ridge Energy is part of several North Carolina electric cooperatives providing Bright Ideas grants. Together, they have provided more than $10.2 million for classroom projects impacting over 2 million students in North Carolina.

NC Native Plant Society Blue Ridge Chapter to Meet Dec. 14

It’s that time for our monthly meeting soon. It will be on Wednesday December 14th(Second Wednesday) at the Holiday Inn Express, 1943 Blowing Rock Road in Boone. The meeting room will open at 6:30 and we’ll start the meeting at 7:00

This meeting will be our annual Christmas/Holiday meeting. We ask everyone to bring a dish to share. It can be heavy Hors d’oeuvres, Vegetables, Meats or deserts. We will provide some apple cider and soft drinks.
This is the meeting where we conduct our annual Native Plant Seed Swap. Please bring your seed you have collected to share with others. Please restrict it to plants native to our region. You can also bring plants, books or anything having to do with our native plants if you don’t have seeds. Please label you items with the Scientific and common name if you can.
This event is always a fun time for all and will be out third such meeting. I look forward to celebrating all things NATIVE with each and every one of you there.

In light of the many wildfires that have spread across the southeast this year, fire is a subject on many minds.  Come learn about the history and nature of fire.  Meet Saturday, December 17th at 2 pm at the park office.

Golf Tournament raises $31k for local Cancer Center

 
Boone, NC (December 2, 2016) – The 44th Annual Grover C. Robbins, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament was held at Grandfather Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, October 11, 2016. The event raised more than $31,000 to benefit the Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center.

 
Sandi Cassidy, Director of Oncology Services, stated: “I cannot express the depth of my gratitude to everyone involved and for all the work that goes into making this incredible event so very special.”

Twenty-seven four-person teams participated in the Scramble event. The first place team for lowest net score included Chad Smith, Vernon Smith, Marvin Cameron and Chris Dauster. The first place team for lowest gross score included Jim Wood, Mark Gould, Rusty Edwards and Gorham Bradley.

 
Since 1942, Spencer Robbins, founder of the Grover C. Robbins, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament, has worked tirelessly to raise funds to support the Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center.  In 2011, Appalachian Regional Healthcare System honored Spencer Robbins with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his service and dedication to support quality healthcare in the High Country. 
 
“Spencer and his brother Harry were the first to step up and make a substantial commitment to healthcare in this community,” said Richard Sparks, President and CEO of Appalachian Regional Healthcare System.
