Alexa Rose hails from southwestern Virginia, where she spent her formative years writing songs about bears in her bedroom window and yodeling from the top of her parents’ mountain home. Her music is rootsy and alternative folk, with just a dash of those old, haunted country songs thrown in. Since 2013, Rose has called the Carolina mountains home. These days, you can find her playing shows in many of the music hubs of Appalachia, often sporting her trusty, dusty Frye boots and blue electric guitar, affectionately called “Fruit Loop.” Her most recent project, released in April 2016, was recorded in Mountain City.

Grandfather Mountain Hosts Sunset, Sunrise Opportunities

With autumn in full swing, Grandfather Mountain is offering guests the chance to see fall color in a different light — literally.

For four dates in October, the Linville, N.C.-based nature preserve and travel attraction will host sunrise and sunset opportunities, allowing guests to witness the splendor of the day’s beginning or end from the High Country’s highest peak.

Sunset opportunities will take place Thursdays, Oct. 13 and 20, while sunrise opportunities will be held Tuesdays, Oct. 18 and 25.

“Autumn is one of the best times to visit Grandfather Mountain,” said Frank Ruggiero, director of marketing and communications for the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation, the nonprofit organization that oversees the park. “The colors are bountiful, the air is crisp, and the sunrises and sunsets are nothing short of magnificent.”

All events are weather-dependent and may be cancelled with short notice in case of inclement weather conditions.

Admission to either of these special after-hours events is $10 per person ($5 for Bridge Club members) and is limited to the first 30 registrants. To register, email frank@grandfather.com, or call (828) 733-2013 during business hours (Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

Since temperatures are significantly lower on Grandfather Mountain, especially at dusk and dawn, participants should wear warm clothes, as well as rubber-soled shoes, since some surfaces can be rugged and slick. Guests are also encouraged to bring a flashlight.

Mast General Store to Host Lunch and Learn with Dr. Nate Regier on Oct. 20: “Conflict without Casualties”

WHAT: Mast General is hosting a lunch and learn featuring Dr. Nate Regier, co-founding owner and chief executive officer of Next Element, a global advisory firm specializing in building cultures of compassionate accountability.

The event is sponsored by Mast General, the Boone Chamber of Commerce, Mary McKinney LMFT, Fairfield Inn & Suites, and High Country United Church of Christ.

In his presentation, “Conflict Without Casualties: Building Cultures of Compassionate Accountability,” Regier will share how leaders and organizations can adapt to change by practicing compassion.

A former practicing psychologist, Dr. Regier is an expert in social-emotional intelligence and leadership, positive conflict, communication, coaching, organizational development, team building and change management.

WHERE: Fairway Cafe, Boone Golf Course, 433 Fairway Drive, Boone, NC, 28607

WHEN: Thursday, October 20, 12-1:30pm.

HOW: Please register online by Oct. 24 here.. Price is $15 for lunch and the presentation.

BACKGROUND: Albert Einstein said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results.” Drawing from his just-released book,Conflict Without Casualties, Regier will compare the rise and fall of human civilization with the life cycle of an organization.

“When we stay in one place too long, struggling against one another to resist change, things begin to fall apart. When we choose negative conflict, we participate in our own demise by failing to respond to a changing world. There comes a point where course corrections are no longer an option, where the point of no return has come and gone and we’ve doomed ourselves to extinction,” he said.

In this session, Regier will demonstrate how to apply Next Element’s Compassion Cycle of openness, resourcefulness, and persistence to participants’ organization, so they can be perpetually moving, searching, effective, and adaptive instead of risking extinction by doing the same things and expecting different results.

“This session will affirm the positive potential in human beings, and reveal a road map for recognizing where we are and what to do next.”

Regier’s new book, Conflict Without Casualties: A Field Guide for Leading With Compassionate Accountability, will be available for purchase and signing.
