State-Wide ‘Booze It and Lose It’ Campaign Results in 3,164 DWI Arrests Across NC; 18 in High Country

Jan. 15, 2014. Over the holiday season, law enforcement personnel across North Carolina arrested 3,164 people between Dec. 13 and Jan. 5 during the Holiday “Booze It and Lose It” campaign.

“We thank the law enforcement officers who worked tirelessly to keep our roads safe while families and friends gathered together over the holidays,” said Don Nail, director of the NC Governor’s Highway Safety Program. “Our efforts to keep those who travel on North Carolina highways safe will continue each and every day, until we reach our goal of zero highway fatalities.”

The totals for Watauga, Avery and Ashe Counties can be found below: 

Ashe County

  • Under 21 DWI charges: 0
  • 21 and over DWI charges: 2
  • Safety belt violations: 17
  • Child passenger safety: 4
  • Other criminal violations: 21

Avery County

  • Under 21 DWI charges: 0
  • 21 and over DWI charges: 5
  • Safety belt violations: 18
  • Child passenger safety: 1
  • Other criminal violations: 10

Watauga County

  • Under 21 DWI charges: 2
  • 21 and over DWI charges: 9
  • Safety belt violations: 34
  • Child passenger safety: 0
  • Other criminal violations: 13

Watauga, Ashe and Avery Counties scored significantly low on the scale. The top five counties for DWI arrests during the campaign include:

  • Wake County: 329 
  • Mecklenburg County: 261
  • Guilford County: 197
  • Forsyth County: 157
  • Cumberland County: 103
