Editor’s Note: On Wednesday morning after the story below was published, Watauga County Elections Director Jane Ann Hodges announced that the Cove Creek precinct was “double counted” on Election Day. This changed the final count of races on Watauga ballots. The outcome between Dan Soucek and Jim Sponenberg doesn’t change. Soucek still won decisively. The screenshot above is the accurate result.

Nov. 4, 2014. Just as N.C. Rep. Jonathan Jordan will return to the N.C. General Assembly for another term, so will N.C. Sen. Dan Soucek.

Soucek, however, earned another two years in a bit more convincing fashion.

Soucek, who is associated with Samaritan’s Purse, took down his challenger, Jim Sponenberg, a banker from Caldwell County, with more than 60 percent of the vote, according to the final, unofficial results in the 2014 general election.

In addition to winning the entire district, he also took Watauga County, too, with 51.24 percent of the vote – 8,815 votes compared to Sponenberg’s 8,388.

“I am just very thankful to the people of the 45th District to put their trust in me again to serve them for two more years,” Soucek said. “I believed from the very beginning that jobs and the economy were the top priority. I think that top priority along with a strong emphasis on family values are what the people of the 45th District asked me to do.”
