Make Your Move; Register Today to Be Part of The Largest Chess Event in North Carolina Aug. 29-Sept. 3

Aug. 20, 2012. Calling all chess players, of all levels of skill! A rare opportunity to compete at an event where master-level chess players will be competing simultaneously is coming to the Piedmont Triad. From Aug. 29- Sept. 3, High Point University will be sponsoring three separate chess events.

One of these, the 2012 North Carolina Open, currently is registering players of all levels to compete against other chess enthusiasts for cash prizes totaling $13,000. The Open will take place Aug. 31-Sept. 2 and will be held at the Embassy Suites, 204 Centrepoint Drive in Greensboro. To learn more about the tournament and to register, visit http://www.ncchess.org/open/2012/ncopen2012.html.

For those who wish to observe rather than participate, two opportunities are available during this unprecedented chess weekend.

The U.S. Masters Chess Tournament, also being staged at the Embassy Suites, is the first of its kind for the Triad. This tournament will host some of the best competitors in the world as they compete for the title of International Chess Master or International Grand Master. The first game will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening, August 30, and the competition will continue with two games each day through Monday, September 3.

The tournament hours will begin at approximately 10:30 am and last as late as midnight, depending upon the pace of play.

Additionally, High Point University will kick off the long weekend by holding a “chess simultaneous” event featuring World Chess Grandmaster Giorgi Magvelashvili of the Republic of Georgia. This event will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, on the university’s campus in the Plato Wilson School of Commerce. Chessboards will be set up so that Magvelashvili can compete against 20 different players at the same time. The chess simultaneous is fast-moving and one of the best events to observe for aspiring young chess players.

All three events are open to the public free of charge. For more information, contact Dr. Walter High at 919-619-3541 or Gary Newsom at 704-618-1259 or visit http://www.ncchess.org/open/2012/USmasters2012.html.
