Feb. 16, 2015. The biggest snowstorm of the winter is forecasted through Tuesday morning with a potential for double-digit accumulations.

The National Weather Service’s Blackburg, Va., office issued a winter-storm warning calling for moderate to heavy snowfall. Heavier snowfall is expected between early afternoon and late Monday.

The forecasts vary slightly with RaysWeather.com calling for seven to 10 inches in Watauga and Ashe counties and six to seven inches in Avery County. The National Weather Service published the attached map this morning predicting four to 14 inches of snow for Watauga County, while its storm warning forecasts four to eight inches, with higher local snowfall possible.

The winter-storm warning expires at noon on Tuesday.

Here’s what RaysWeather.com had to say in its forecast discussion Monday morning:

“Low pressure rolling east across the Southeast U. S. collides with Arctic air over us. The result will be a significant winter storm. Flurries are possible this morning. Accumulating snow begins around or after noon. The heaviest precipitation comes later this afternoon and evening. The complicating factor is a layer of warmer air at about 8000 feet. It will change precipitation to sleet from Avery County south, maybe a little bit of mixing in Watauga County. Precipitation will probably be all snow north of Watauga County.”
