Fairies & Gnomes, Houses Building

Saturday, Sept. 1 – Meet at Picnic Shelter – 2 p.m.

Come up on the mountain and use your imagination and natural materials to build woodland creature house. Each person or family will build a small house for an imaginary small creature. 

 

Mt. Jefferson Geology Hike

Sunday, Sept. 2 – Meet at Picnic Shelter – 2 p.m.

Mount Jefferson stands today at 4683 feet above sea level. Was this mountain once 15,000 feet high? Have there ever been any major rockslides on this metamorphic mountain? What is Amphibolite anyway? Meet a ranger for a 1-mile hike and explore some of the geological mysteries that make this mountain’s geology rock. Bring a jacket and wear sturdy shoes.

 

(Labor Day) Trees and Tee’s “Paint your own Tee-Shirt”  

Monday, Sept. 3 – Meet at picnic Shelter – 2 p.m.  

Make your very own shirt design using leaves and fabric medium. Kids & Teens will create t-shirt designs using natural materials (leaves) and fabric paints. Tee shirt will be provided as long as supplies last.

 

New Moon (No-Moon) Night Hike to Luther Rock

Friday, Sept. 14 – Meet at Park Office – 7 p.m.

Are you looking for an adventure after dark? Come on up to Mt. Jefferson for a breathtaking hike at night. Meet the park ranger for a 1-mile hike along the ridgeline out to Luther Rock. Bring a small flashlight and wear sturdy shoes. Parts of this hike are considered strenuous and hiking at night can be physically challenging. This program is designed for adults with good basic hiking skill. Children over 7 are welcome but must be closely supervised. Call 336-246-9653 to sign up, or email Mount.Jefferson@ncdenr.gov

Hike with a park ranger and discover the natural world of Mt. Jefferson. Walk along the ridgeline and view the distant peaks as you explore this mountain’s natural beauty. Wear sturdy shoes for this hike of discovery. 

 

Underground Railroad Hike

Saturday, Sept. 15 – Meet at Picnic Area – 1 p.m.

Traverse the history of Mount Jefferson with a ranger as he travels back in time to the days of the Underground Railroad. Participants will experience the folklore and history surrounding Mount Jefferson as you hike along the mountain ridge.

Enjoy a view of three states while learning the stories and traditions associated with Mount Jefferson and its surrounding mountains.

The Legend of Tom Dooley 

Sunday, Sept. 16 – Meet at Second Overlook – 2 p.m.

Join a Western North Carolina native as he relives the last days of the North Carolina legend, Tom Dooley. Did Tom Dooley murder Laura Foster in the Shadows of the Blue Ridge?

Enjoy a view of three states while learning the stories and traditions associated with Mount Jefferson and its surrounding mountains. This program is weather dependent.

(Public Lands Day) Trail Clean-Up

Saturday, Sept. 29, Meet at Picnic Area – 9 a.m.   

Meet the ranger at the picnic area and help clean up the trails at Mt. Jefferson. Candy wrappers and cigarette butts don’t belong on the ground in your park. Lend a hand and help clean up the trails. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
