Kicking off the opening season of Horn in the West are two exciting events to help celebrate the outdoor drama’s 65th consecutive season.

The first event is a kickoff gala that will be held Friday, June 24. An Evening Backstage takes the members of a small audience behind-the-scenes of the longest-running Revolutionary War outdoor drama in America. The audience will be able to get an exclusive first look of the show before the public opening night on June 25. The event includes food and drinks, music and a backstage tour with the cast and crew. To purchase tickets for this special event, call the box office at 828-264-2120.

The second event highlights the 65th season, which is aimed to give back to the members of the community for more than six decades of continuous support. On opening night, Saturday, June 25, residents of Watauga County pay the same price as they did in 1952, the first season of Horn in the West. For just $2, residents can learn about and enjoy the history of Daniel Boone and the mountain settlers. Horn in the West asks that tickets for this are purchased in person to validate Watauga County residency.

Carson Sailor, executive administrator at Horn in the West, said the special ticket price is a way to say thanks to the community that has been such a blessing to the show.

“Community has been the staple of Horn in the West,” Sailor said. “The show really took off because of the locals.”

Horn in the West started when a group of local community members came together from the Southern Appalachian Historical Association and decided to put on a local drama about the history of Daniel Boone. Since the opening in 1952, the show has been seen by over 1.4 million people.

A large number of the cast and crew involved, as well as the workers at Horn in the West, are all members of the community or students and alumni of Appalachian State University.

The play will run Tuesday through Sunday, June 25 to Aug. 6 from 8-10 p.m. each night. It is located at 591 Horn in the West Drive at the Daniel Boone Amphitheatre. For ticket purchases and more information, call the box office at 828-264-2120 or visit www.horninthewest.com

Guests are also invited to enjoy the Hickory Ridge Museum, which depicts a mid-1770 mountain community that attempts to show domestic life and what the actual people were going through at that time leading up to the show. The museum has expanded from its previous six-week season to be open from April 1 to Nov. 30., with tours available every day at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday mornings are free and open to the public.
