High Country Festival of the Book Promotes Story-writing Contest for Children

July 9, 2012. People have been wondering about the pretty lady in pink ever since Stephanie Welden’s painting was selected as the official artwork of the new High Country Festival of the Book. Welden, who named her pastel drawing “Fairy Tale,” isn’t saying why she depicted the lady floating so contentedly among trees. She believes that viewers prefer to construct their own stories. Festival organizers agree, and are welcoming the opportunity to read the stories inspired by “Fairy Tale” and written by children.

The Story Writing Contest is open to youthful authors in three age categories: 6-9 years, 10-13 years, and 14-17 years. Submissions will be judged by authors from the High Country Writers group.

Winners will receive a book bag full of goodies. Entries to the Story Writing Contest are due July 21. All submissions should be turned in to the Youth Services Desk at the Watauga County Public Library, 140 Queen Street, in Boone.
