Funeral Services for Doc Watson Set for Sunday, June 3, at 3 p.m. at the Laurel Springs Baptist Church in Deep Gap

May 31, 2012. According to reports coming in, details have been released regarding Doc Watson’s funeral. The funeral will be held on Sunday, June 3, at 3 p.m. at the Laurel Springs Baptist Church in Deep Gap on Highway 421.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. after the funeral at the church. 

Rev. Gary Watson and Pastor Larry Young will officiate the service and burial will follow at the Doc and Merle Watson Cemetery.

Arthel Lane “Doc” Watson, age 89, of Deep Gap, died Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Doc was born March 3, 1923 in the Stony Fork Community of Watauga County, a son of the late General Dixon Watson and Annie Greene Watson. He was a member of Mount Paran Baptist Church, and a honorary member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Doc is survived by his wife, Rosa Lee Carlton Watson of the home; one daughter, Nancy Ellen Watson of the home; one granddaughter, Karen Watson Norris of Deep Gap; one grandson, Richard Eddie Watson and wife Annette of Deep Gap; three great-granddaughters, Candis Amber Watson and Chelsea Michelle Norris and her friend Josh Kilgore, and Sarah Elizabeth Norris, all of Deep Gap; one great-grandson, Michael Channing Norris, II of Deep Gap; two great great-grandchildren, Tanten Webb of Boone, and Brennon Kilgore of Blowing Rock; two brothers, Linney G. Watson of Wilberton, Oklahoma, and G. David Watson and his friend Angie Greene of Boone, and one sister, Jewel Watson of Boone. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Eddie Merle Watson; two sisters, Ruby Watson and Ethel Thomas; three brothers, Arnold R. Watson, Russeau Watson, and Ottis W. Watson; two sisters-in-law, Mae Watson and Ruby Watson, and one brother-in-law, Levi Watson.

Funeral services for Arthel Lane “Doc” Watson will be conducted Sunday afternoon, June 3, 2012, at 3:00 o’clock, at Laurel Springs Baptist Church in Deep Gap. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 2:00 until 3:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Gary Watson and Pastor Larry Young. Burial will follow in the Doc and Merle Watson Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends Saturday, from 5:00 until 9:00 o’clock, at Laurel Springs Baptist Church. At other times, friends may call at the home of his granddaughter, Karen Watson Norris, 973 Trojan Horse Circle, Fleetwood, North Carolina, or at the home of a brother, G. David Watson, 2930 Deerfield Road, Boone.
