The workshop will explore traditional East Asian tools such as sumi-ink, traditional bamboo brushes and rice paper.

In-class exercises will explore the basic skills of brushwork and ‘flow (liu)’

by learning basic Chinese characters and then to incorporate the principles of calligraphic painting into personalized artistic styles that allow workshop participants to create their own unique blend of Asian and European artistic styles. Ink-wash and watercolor techniques will also be explored as essential elements of East-West approaches to art. We will explore Chinese and Japanese approaches to calligraphy and landscape genres and explore the connection between body, mind and creative flow that makes

East Asian art unique.
