Boone Town Council Meets Monday and Thursday, Public Hearing on Budget and The Standard Rezoning Decision

By Jesse Wood

June 13, 2014. The Boone Town Council meets next week on Monday, June 16, and Thursday, June 19.

On Monday, the Boone Town Council will hold a public hearing on the 2014-15 fiscal year budget at 5 p.m. That entire budget can be viewed here. The budget message can be viewed here. In it the Town Manager Greg Young notes that he was calling for a property tax increase, which is now proposed for a six cents increase, because of the shortfall from the redistribution of the sales tax in an ad valorem fashion.

The Monday meeting is also for the Boone Town Council to finalize the agenda for the Thursday meeting.

On Thursday, the Boone Town Council has numerous matters to address, including the adoption of the 2014-15 fiscal year budget.

Among other items is the discussion of downtown booting complaints. While citizens and parking lot attendants have spoken before the council as recently as the last month, this issue made headlines last week when a parking lot attendant was arrested after shoving a citizen during the First Friday Art Crawl in downtown Boone.

The Town of Boone will also make the final decision on whether or not to rezone property for The Standard of Boone development in between U.S. 321 and Faculty Street. Last Monday, the Boone Area Planning Commission recommended the request to rezone several parcels to the Conditional District General Business district. Those include 784, 862 and 862-B Blowing Rock Road; 299, 311, 325 and 339 Faculty Street; and three vacant parcels.
