Boom One Records Brings Out The ‘Bass Culture’

Nov. 5, 2012. Two Appalachian State University Alumni have turned their passion into an enterprise.

Boom One Records, launched in Jan. 2012, is the brainchild of Justin Butler and Peter Brown, two former Appalachian State students who have been playing music in the High Country for quite some time.

“We have been musicians for a number of years, and we thought that if we could create a label for ourselves it would be easier to release our own music,” said Brown.

Their idea to have total control over their own music evolved into a way to put out quality music from musicians and groups from around the world.

Brown and Butler, co-founders of Boom One Records

“We wanted to create a network of musicians across the world and help them get their music out there,” Butler said.

Boom One Records focuses mainly on reggae, dubstep and world music and has become an avenue for musicians from around the globe to have worldwide distribution.

They distribute artists like Boom One Sound, Dubsmith, Damo Niamad, Hope Massive, Kontur, Piper Street Sound and many more.

“The purpose is not to do all local music, but to support genre specific music like reggae, dub and electronic; in other words, ‘bass culture’ music,” said Butler

The majority of their worldwide distribution centers around online distribution mediums like Itunes and Google Music using Symphonic Distribution.

“We are trying to keep plastics and other non-biodegradables to a minimum,” said Brown.

Peter Brown, a 2000 graduate of ASU, has no formal musical background, however, he has played reggae music for years.

Justin Butler, also an ASU Alumnus, has a masters degree in classical guitar performance and teaches at Appalachian State University and Caldwell Community College.

More information can be found on their website, their Facebook page and their SoundCloud page.
