The SafeWise Report Announces the 50 Safest Cities in North Carolina, Boone Comes in at No. 19

April 22, 2014. The SafeWise Report released its “50 Safest Cities in North Carolina” report this week. To compile this report, SafeWise used the most recent FBI crime data from 2012 to analyze and rank these cities.

We look at crimes from part 1 of the FBI Unified Crime Report (UCR) reported crime data, which focuses on violent crimes (aggravated assault, forcible rape, murder, and robbery) as well as property crimes (arson, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft). From there, we calculate the chances of these crimes happening out of a thousand in order to level the playing field for cities of varying populations. From all the cities in North Carolina, we narrowed the list down to 50 and assigned rankings according to data provided by the FBI’s UCR report.

“It’s easy to see why families and businesses are flocking to North Carolina,” SafeWise security analyst Alexia Chianis said. “A pleasant year-round climate, an abundance of recreational opportunities, and especially safe streets are a few of the Tar Heel State’s many assets.”

Boone was No. 19 on the list:

19. Boone

It’s only fitting that a town named after the great adventurer and pioneer Daniel Boone be bursting with outdoor pursuits! One of North Carolina’s most beloved recreation centers, Boone offers the active family year-round outdoor thrills. Call Boone home and your family will also benefit from a consistently high ranked school system, close proximity to well respected Appalachian State University, and the Appalachian Regional Medical Center.

Boone also boasts Rocky Knob Park which offers some of the finest mountain biking in the East. Parents looking for a weekend retreat won’t need to go far, as Boone is home to a handful of sensational spas and the Boone Area Wine Trail. Relax as you sip on a regional favorite and chat with vineyard owners, then take a few bottles of the best blend home. Rest assured, Boone is bursting with good vibes that your whole family will enjoy.

Violent Crimes Per 1,000: 1.95
Property Crimes Per 1,000: 5.64
