John Dawkins (May 15, 1937 – July 19, 2016)

John Dawkins, 79, of Hampton Glade Road, Blowing Rock, passed away Tuesday afternoon, July 19, 2016, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation in Boone.

John was born May 15, 1937 in Gastonia, North Carolina, the son of the late Leon Dawkins and Edna C. Dawkins. He was a retired electrical engineer of IBM Corporation and served in the United States Air Force.

John is survived by one daughter, Amanda K. Wrenn and husband Randy, Sr. of Blowing Rock; one granddaughter, Courtney B. Wrenn and fiance Alex Luster of Deep Gap; three grandsons, Randy Wrenn, Jr. of Boone, Andrew Dawkins and MacKinnley Dawkins, both of Indianapolis, Indiana; one great-granddaughter, Ryleigh Grace Luster of Deep Gap, and one sister, Ann Carr of Boone. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne Stockton Dawkins; one son, John Andrew “Andy” Dawkins, and one sister, Gloria Massey.

Funeral services for John Dawkins will be conducted Thursday afternoon, July 29, 2016, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Virginia Purifoy. Military Honors, provided by the United States Air Force, American Legion Post 130, and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow.

The family will receive friends, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Shirley K. Trachtenberg (Dec. 18, 1940 – July 19, 2016)

3812151_wlppShirley Kris Trachtenberg, 75, Sardis Road, Charlotte, a former resident of Boone, passed away Tuesday morning, July 19, 2016, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Shirley was born December 18, 1940 in Colon, Panama, a daughter of the late Harry Kris and Miriam Kris Attia. She owner and operator of the Sock Stop in Boone for 26 years.

Shirley is survived by two sons, Harry Trachtenberg and wife Jorganna of Boca Raton, Florida, and Sam Trachtenberg and wife Samanta of San Francisco, California; one daughter, Tanya Coughenour of Tega Cay, South Carolina; one sister, Julie Colantonio of Houston, Texas, and seven grandchildren, Abigail Trachtenberg and Max Trachtenberg, both of Boca Raton, Florida, Laia Trachtenberg and Nora Trachtenberg, both of San Francisco, California, William Coughenour, Ethan Coughenour, and Cooper Coughenour, all of Tega Cay, South Carolina.

Funeral services for Shirley Kris Trachtenberg will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, July 20, 2016, at 4:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 3:30 until 4:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Chuck Lieberman.

Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

Jacques Downing, 39, of Banner Elk, died Monday, July 18, 2016.

Calvin Leroy Ifill, Jr. (Sept. 15, 1918 – July 17, 2016)

Calvin Leroy Ifill, Jr., 97, of Providence Road, Charlotte, a former resident of Watauga County, passed away Sunday morning, July 17, 2016, at Sunrise on Providence in Charlotte.

Mr. Ifill was born September 15, 1918 in Rahway, New Jersey, a son of the late Calvin Leroy Ifill, Sr., and Josephine Ifill.

He was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army, earning both a Bronze star and 2 Purple Hearts. He was a retired Police Officer for the City of Rahway, New Jersey. While living in Watauga County, he was an active member of Snow Lodge 363 and Holy Communion Lutheran Church.

Mr. Ifill is survived by his wife, Meta Born Ifill, and one daughter, Shannon Ifill Scott, both of Charlotte.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Calvin Leroy Ifill, Sr. and Josephine Ifill, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services for Calvin Leroy Ifill, Jr. will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, July 20, 2016 at 2:00 at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Chaplain Melanie Childers. Military rites and burial, provided by the United States Army, American Legion Post 130 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90 and Masonic graveside rites, provided by Snow Lodge 363, will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Service, one hour prior to the service.

Darren Cantrell, 52, of NC Highway 105, Banner Elk, passed away Saturday morning, July 16, 2016, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, after a short illness.

Printz and husband Sean of Greensboro; his father and mother, James and Joyce Cantrell of Boone; two sisters, Evalyn Sudderth and husband George of Blowing Rock, and Renada Miller and husband Mitch of Boone; one granddaughter, Ivy Printz of Greensboro; two grandsons, Grayson Printz and Jed Printz, both of Greensboro; two nieces, Natasha Sudderth of Blowing Rock and April Miller of Hickory, one nephew, Chip Sudderth of Oak Island, North Carolina, two great-nieces, and three great-nephews.

Graveside services and burial for Darren Cantrell will be held Tuesday afternoon, July 19, 2016, at 2:00 o’clock, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

“Ginger” Walker (Sept. 11, 1939 – July 15, 2016)

Judith Virginia “Ginger” Walker, 76, of Blowing Rock, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 15,2016 surrounded with love and her family.

3810211_wlppGinger was born in Detroit, MI, lived most of her life in West Palm Beach,FL and retired to Blowing Rock to enjoy time with her family. She is survived by her husband, Robert Walker and 7 children; Lisa Eguia Burdette, Robin Irene Walker, Linda Eguia Campbell, Mark Eguia, Jennifer Walker Porch, Maite Eguia Harte and Matthew Eguia and 10 grandchildren. She is also survived by her friend and ex-husband, Jesus M. Eguia and his wife Ana.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings; Bill, Rick and Susie and step-daughter, Martha Ann Walker and her baby, Robert.

Ginger had many gifts and talents but most of all she had love to share. In addition to raising 8 children her door was always open to any and all to offer support and listen without judgement. She always had a smile, positive attitude and unbreakable spirit.

She was a beautician, American Gem Society gemologist, caregiver to children with HIV, volunteer Spanish interpreter and loved volunteering at the Budget Box thrift shop for the Blowing Rock hospital. Her greatest gift was caring for others which included at least 3 stray dogs at any given time.

Blanford Bernard Hodgson (June 14, 1919 – July 14, 2016)

Blanford Bernard Hodgson, age 97, of Meat Camp Road, Boone, passed away Thursday evening, July 14, 2016 at Watauga Medical Center.

BigHodgson, BlanfordMr. Hodgson was born June 14, 1919 in Watauga County to A. W. and Pearl Proffit Hodgson. He was a member of Proffitts Grove Baptist Church. From 1941 until 1945, he served in the 8th Infantry of the US Army during WWII and was awarded four bronze stars for serving campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. Mr. Hodgson was a cattle farmer and a saw miller. His family was always his priority. He and his wife enjoyed raising annual vegetable gardens to share with family and friends.

Mr. Hodgson is survived by his wife of 68 years, Elsie Greene Hodgson; son, Barney Hodgson and wife, Dianne Ward, and daughter, Jeanette Lyons and husband, Jim, all of Boone; grandchildren, Drew Wallace of Blowing Rock, Brad Hodgson and wife, Holly, of Kernersville, Justin Hodgson and Kerri Brown, both of Boone; and great grandchildren, Hal Hodgson, Jackson Borrack, Madison Haynes, Kalani Brown and Mariana Brown. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Bert Hodgson; and two sisters, Muriel Wilkinson and Stella Rhea Trivette.

Funeral services for Bernard Hodgson will be conducted Sunday afternoon, July 17, 2016 at 3 oclock at Proffitts Grove Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Delmar James and Rev. Herbert McCoy. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 1:30 until 3 oclock, prior to services, at the church. Military graveside services provided by the American Legion Post 130 at the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90 will follow at the Meat Camp Baptist Church Cemetery.

Clara J. Bush (April 4, 1943 – July 14, 2016)

Clara Jane Brown Bush, age 73, of Blowing Rock, passed away Thursday, July 14, 2016 at her residence.

Louise Tucker Anderson (Dec. 11, 1918 – July 14, 2016)

3809404_wlppLouise Tucker Anderson, 97, of Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living died July 14, 2016.

She was born December 11, 1918 to the late William Brady Tucker and Odie Wright Tucker in Polkton, North Carolina where she graduated from high school. She worked hard with her six siblings on the family farm until moving to Wadesboro, North Carolina.

She worked in a hosiery plant during the war, married Basil Lee Ray and had a daughter, Carol. After moving to Charlotte with her second-husband Robert Donald Anderson and daughter, Robin, she was the manager at Lily Rubin in South Park Mall as well as other retail stores, retiring at age 84.

She is survived by, two daughters, Carol Martin and husband Baine of Boone and Robin Blackman and husband Robert of Charlotte, five grandchildren, Baine Martin III, of Boone, Laura Himler and husband Scott of Cornelius, Kate Jones and husband Derrick of Boone, Barbara Cassada and husband Chuck, and Heather Smith and husband Justin of Charlotte, nineteen great grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. One brother Ed Tucker of Polkton, and one sister-in-law Neal Tucker of Wadesboro.

She was preceded in death by five siblings that are waiting for her in heaven, two sisters, Christine Lane and Faire Belle Gaddy, three brothers Jim, Charles and Killian Tucker.

She was preceded also by two sister-in-law’s, Lib Tucker and Dot Tucker.

A private graveside service will be conducted in Charlotte at a later date. 

Louise was at Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living for almost five years. The family would like to thank the staff for caring for her with such love and compassion. Thank you also to Baine and Kate. Carol would like to express her thanks to Elizabeth Young.

Sherman Allen Greene (Oct. 31, 1957 – July 13, 2016)

Sherman was born October 31, 1957 in Watauga County, a son of the late Germia and Dare Tester Greene. He was a truck driver for J.H. Distributors in Granite Falls, a carpenter, and was of the Baptist Faith.

Sherman is survived by his wife, Rita H. Greene of the home; one daughter, Heather Oakes and husband Bradley of Sugar Grove; one son, Ryan Greene and wife Samantha of Vilas; three sisters, Teresa Greene and her fiance, Paul Andorn of Maine, Janet Hagaman and husband Joe of Vilas, and Paula Oxentine and husband John of Vilas, and two grandsons, Merrix and Haydon Oakes, both of Sugar Grove. He is also survived by one uncle, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and burial for Sherman Allen Greene will be conducted Sunday afternoon, July 17, 2016, at 2:00 o’clock, at the Greene Family Cemetery. Officiating will be Reverend David Ward.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the home of a sister, Janet and Joe Hagaman, 2818 Stone Mountain Road, Vilas.

Mozelle Greer Miller (Oct. 15, 1926 – July 13, 2016)

Mrs. Miller was born October 15, 1926 in Watauga County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Virgil M. Greer and Clara Church Greer. She was a homemaker, and a member of Howards Creek Baptist Church.

Mrs. Miller is survived by three brothers, Joe Greer and wife Joyce, Shanty Greer and Mack Greer, all of Boone; and three sisters, Juanita G. Welch of Stoney Fork, Lezette Greer of Boone, and Joann Greer and husband Bill of Lenoir. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Miller, one son, Bobby Miller, four brothers, Zeke, Brook, Paul and Silas Greer, and one sister, Dare Greene. 

Funeral services for Mrs. Mozelle Greer Miller will be conducted Sunday afternoon, July 17, 2016, at 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Gordon Noble will officiate.The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

Billy Jack McDaniel (D. July 13, 2016)

Billie Jack McDaniel, Jr., 40, husband, father, author, evangelist, and inspirational speaker, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at his home in Florence.

Billy jack McDanielFamily and friends will gather at 6 PM on Tuesday, July 19th at The South Warehouse located at 627 E. Silas Brown Street in Jackson. A Memorial Service will begin at 6:15 PM followed by a reception and celebration of Jack’s life at 7 PM. A native of Laurel, Jack was reared in Ovet and spent most of his life in Florence.

He worked as a derrick-man with H&P Drilling Oil Field and was injured March 3, 2006. Jack was an inspiration to many because of his zest for life, his faithfulness to God, and his love for family and friends. After his accident he became a licensed evangelist through the Southern Baptist Convention.

A faithful friend with the heart of a lion, he was the noted author of Dead Man Breathing. Jack attended Briar Hill Baptist Church. Jack was preceded in death by his grandmother, Delores McDaniel. He is survived by his wife of nineteen years, A’Leta Combs McDaniel; daughter, Carney McDaniel; mother, Hope Delaughter; cousin, Chris McDaniel; his service dogs, Dallas, Tooti, Valle, and Lola Belle; fellow workers on the rig; family; and a host of friends and followers around the world.

Dianne H. Watson (Dec. 26, 1958 – July 12, 2016)

Dianne Harrison Watson, age 57, of Boone, passed away Tuesday morning, July 12, 2016 at her home. Born December 26, 1958 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late Jerry and Dare Wilson Harrison. Dianne was a member of Greenway Baptist Church. She was an administrative assistant at Watauga Medical Center, where she was employed for 36 years.

She is survived by one son, Josh Watson and wife Emily and their children Aiden, Mallory and Reid of Troutman; one daughter, Jenny Peele and husband Shawn and their daughter Haileigh of Boone; one brother, Luther Harrison and wife Michelle of Boone, and their daughters Kristin Ek and Hollie Harrison; six aunts, Ella Mae Tester of Greensboro, Martha Moody and husband Joe of Boone, Betty James and husband Doyle of Vilas, Mary Lou Hodges and husband Jack of Mountain City, Tennessee, Ruth Frye and husband Don of Buffalo, New York, and Jean Collins and husband Bob of Boone, and one uncle, Romy Harrison and wife Jo of Boone.

Memorial services for Dianne Harrison Watson will be conducted Friday morning, July 15, at 11 AM at Greenway Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Darrell Hobbs and Rev. Harold Bennett. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Appalachian State University Dare Harrison Nursing Scholarship c/o the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System Foundation, PO Box 2600, Boone, North Carolina, 28607.
