Vera Byers Church (Dec. 28, 1910
 – April 5, 2016)

Mrs. Vera Byers Church, age 105, of Old US Highway 421, Zionville, the Mable Community, passed away Tuesday morning, April 5, 2016 at the Blowing Rock Hospital in Blowing Rock.

Mr. George L. Bunton (Dec. 1, 1940 – April 3, 2016)

Mr. George Lewis Bunton, age 75, of Flat Springs Road, Elk Park, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2016 at the Mountain City Care Center. Born December 1, 1940 in Avery County, he was a son of the late Dallas Odell Bunton and Rosa Mitchell Bunton. George was retired from Appalachian State University, and Vermont American. He was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Farthing Bunton, one son, John Bunton and fiancé Lindsey of Boone, one granddaughter, Paige Bunton of Boone, his mother, Rosa Bunton of Elk Park, one sister, Mary Fay Henson and husband Arlie of Sugar Grove, a niece, Janice Harmon and husband Jackie of Sugar Grove, an uncle, Dee Mitchell and wife Bernice, an aunt, Maud Mitchell all of Elk Park, five sisters in law, Marie, Reba, Marilyn, Joane and Linda Farthing, three brothers in law, Dennis Harmon, and Victor and Richard Farthing, and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one nephew, Larry Len Henson, his grandparents, George and Mary Mitchell and Emma Bunton, his father and mother in law, Edgar and Genive Farthing, and two brothers in law, Dwight and Darryel Farthing.

Funeral services for Mr. George Lewis Bunton will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 oclock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Derick Wilson. Burial will follow in the Mt. Gilead Cemetery. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Mt. Gilead Cemetery fund, in care of Darryel Reece, 3041 Flat Springs Road, Elk Park, NC 28622.

The family will receive friends prior to the service Wednesday afternoon from 12:30 until 2 oclock at the funeral home.

Suzanne L. Hamilton (Feb. 10, 1937 – April 2, 2016)

BigHamilton, 3Suzanne L. Hamilton of Boone, passed away Saturday morning, April 2, 2016 at her residence surrounded by her family.

Suzanne was born in Buffalo, NY and graduated from Mount Saint Mary Acadamy. She was the daughter of E. Bert and Mary Louise Reiche

Suzanne worked and volunteered at Horn in the West in Boone for 45 years. She was best known for her homemade bread. She was a lover of animals and a faithful member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Terry W. Hamilton. Two daughters, Peggy DiYorio and husband Nick, Aileen Sherman and husband Matt. One son, Scott Hamilton and wife Hilda. One brother, Ed Reiche and wife Fran. Along with eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, April 8, 2016 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Elizabeths Catholic Church, Boone.

Barbara Blalock Teague (Jan. 28, 1929 – April 2, 2016)

Barbara Worth Blalock Teague, age 87, of Newland passed away on April 2, 2016 at the Life Care Center in Banner Elk.

“B’s” as she was affectionately known, was born January 28, 1929 to the late Dr. Preston Green and Phoebe Worth Green of Mount Airy, NC. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by two husbands, Ted W. “Bob” Blalock and Leonard Owen Teague; a brother, Bill Green of Greensboro, NC.

She has left to cherish her memory are her three sons, Barry Blalock and wife Shelia of Charlotte and Newland, Brad Blalock and wife Mary of Montezuma, Brian Blalock and wife Fredda of Banner Elk; one half brother, David Green and wife Joann of Virginia Beach, VA; one half sister, Sarah and husband Ken of Charroux, France; granddaughters, Julie and Joe Hall of Clover, SC, Jennifer Blalock of Charlotte, Crissy Blalock and Chris Rickman of Linville, Ally and Aaron Long of Newland; great grandchildren, Blaze VanDyke, Aliza VanDyke, Grayson Hall, Carter Hall, and Jewlz VanDyke.

Barbara-Blalock-Teague-1459756403Barbara’s early education started in Mount Airy where she finished high school at the age of sixteen. She received an Associates Degree from Lees-McRae College in 1946. She served several secretarial jobs with First Congregational Church of Rock Springs, WY, Glen Raven Mills, Grandfather Golf and Country Club and the Avery Development Corporation. She served as President of the Ladies Golf Association at Mountain Glen Golf Course. Barbara also served on Newland’s Beautification Committee. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church Newland.

Barbara enjoyed talking about her beloved family, especially her three sons. She looked forward to Spring each year to spend time on her flowers and of course playing golf at her favorite Mountain Glen Golf Course.

The family will receive friends on Monday, April 4, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.at the First Baptist Church Newland. Funeral services will follow on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow in the Newland Cemetery.

Kathleen Jane Murdock Anderson (June 15, 1920
- April 1, 2016)

Mrs. Kathleen Jane Murdock Anderson, age 95, of Rembrandt Drive, Boone, passed away Friday morning, April 1, 2016 at her home.

3644410_wlppMrs. Anderson was born June 15, 1920 in Belfast, Ireland, a daughter of Samuel Murdock and Eliza McClung Murdock. She majored in fashion design at Cass Tech Prep School, and was a Link Trainer-Operator for the Navy Waves, teaching Navy Pilots how to fly. She also retired as manager of Creative Crafts.

Mrs. Anderson is survived by four daughters, Tim Watson and husband Bob of Raleigh, Leslie Ducassi and husband Henry of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Robin Anderson of Boone, and Chris Carrigan and husband Ford of Charlotte; one son, Ken Anderson, Jr., and wife Lisa of Boone; ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Alvin Anderson, and her parents, Samuel Murdock and Eliza McClung Murdock.

Memorial Services for Mrs. Kathleen Jane Murdock Anderson will be conducted Saturday afternoon, April 9, 2016 at 2:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, followed by military honors provided by the United States Navy. Officiating will be Pastor Larry Young. Burial will follow in the Black Mountain Veterans Cemetery, at a later date.

The family will receive friends, Saturday afternoon, at Hampton Funeral Service, following the service.

Anna Lee Hayes (March 29, 1935
 – March 31, 2016)

Anna Lee Hayes Summit, 81, of E. Center Street, died Thursday, March 31, 2016, at Wake Forest Baptist Health – Lexington Medical Center.

The funeral will be 12 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2016, at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Titus. Burial will follow in Jont Brown Family Cemetery in Boone. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Mrs. Summit was born March 29, 1935, in Watauga County, to James Alfonso Hayes and Anna Louise Colvard Hayes. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Franklin Summit; and sister, Mary Lee Fletcher.

Surviving are sons, Wilby Frank Summit of Louisiana and Kenneth Douglas Summit and wife Lila of Lexington; daughters, Mia Cooper and husband Rick, Charlotte Lea Summit, Penny O. Summit, all of Lexington and Cynthia Ingalls and husband Preston of Raleigh; 13 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; brothers, Harold Hayes and wife Alta, Ken Hayes and wife Beulah, all of Boone, and Bill Hayes and wife Carrie of Monroe; sister, Elizabeth Carson Kanupp of Marysville, OH.; and beloved companion, Sissy.

Brother David Eugene Stines (Aug. 14, 1935 – March 31, 2016)

He was born August 14, 1935 in Wise County, VA. a son of the late Henderson Stines and Rosa Bledsoe Stines Cottrell.

David-Stines-1459527580David was a loving father, husband and mentor who loved traveling and ministering The Word of God. Along with his wife, Goldean, he founded the Blue Ridge Mountain Church in 1972. He traveled to Israel 30 times because he loved and honored Israel with all his heart. He finally made it home.

Along with his parents, David was preceded in death by his: step father, Clyde Cottrell; wife, Goldean Potter Stines; daughter, Carolyn McKinney; son, Jesse Stines; brothers, Jesse Stines, Junior Cottrell.

David has left to cherish his memory his: children, Don Stines and wife Evelyn of Elk Park, NC.; David Stines and wife Melissa of Elk Park NC., Rebecca Dellinger of Lenoir, NC.; sisters, Betty Severt and husband Mike of Gamewell, NC., Frances Shew and husband James of Gamewell, NC., Evelyn Fleenor of Hudson, NC., Josephine Ellis and husband Jim of Elizabethton, TN.; brothers, Larry Stines and wife Carol of Elizabethton, TN., Roy Stines and wife Sherry of Valdese, NC., James Cottrell of Lenoir; daughter in law, Kathy Stines of Elk Park, NC.; son in law Jeff McKinney of Roan Mountain, TN.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for David Eugene Stines will be conducted on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at 12:00 pm with Brother Jim Moore officiating. Interment will follow in the Blue Ridge Mountain Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 2, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Blue Ridge Mountain Church.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff of Life Care Center in Banner Elk and the staff of Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville, and a very heartfelt thank you to the Nurses and staff of Medi Home Hospice for the wonderful care and support they have shown David and his family.

Marvin Vance (Aug. 26, 1929 – March 29, 2016)

Marvin “Buddy” Vance, age 86, of Jonesborough passed away on March 29, 2016 at Durham Hensley Nursing Home in Chucky, TN.

Marvin-Vance-1459425436He was born August 26, 1929 in Avery County, NC a son of the late Arthur Blake and Eva Wise Vance.

Buddy was a Shrubberyman and founded Buddy’s stand in Crossnore. He also loved collecting antiques and operated an Antique Store.

Along with his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by his: granddaughter, Mary Vitrone; brothers, Luther, Duton, Stokes, A.B. and Bill; sisters, Ona Buchanan, Ora Lee Henderson, Aster Webb and Betty Draughon.

Marvin has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Linda Vance of the home; daughters, Patricia Drinkard and husband Dan of Hickory, NC., Tracey Vaaler and husband Larry of Valdese, NC.; sons, Keith Vance of Marion, NC., Denver Vance and wife Mary of Greeneville, TN.; sister, Eva Jo Townsend of Crossnore, NC; 6 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren.
