Folks throughout the High Country are keeping their eyes peeled for furry little guys they can enter in this weekend’s races at the 38th annual Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk. Event coordinators are looking for them, too, and they’ll even pay you to help provide woolly worms for the races!

Festivities at this two-day celebration of the changing seasons will center on the racing of the woolly worms, one of the area’s favorite autumn traditions. The races begin at 9 a.m. each day and a championship race will be held at 4 p.m. both afternoons.

The winning worm from Saturday’s race, the highlight of the weekend, will help predict the winter weather that’s in store for us.

To participate in the race, bring your own woolly worm or buy one from local students raising money for the PTO at their school.

The festival organization will have some worms on-hand, too, for folks who can’t find them to bring along. They’re searching for worms in the community to make sure they’ll have enough, and they can use your help, too.

Have you seen a lot of woollies around your house lately? Collect them and bring them to the new Banner Elk school on Friday (beginning at 9 a.m.) and the festival organizers will pay you $1 each for the worms you can contribute. Limit 25 worms per family.
