Crime Stoppers, App State PD Seek Help in Finding Alleged Perpetrator for Monday Assault of Female ASU Student

Oct. 14, 2014. High Country Crime Stoppers and ASU Police Department seek the public’s assistance in solving the following crime:

On October 13, 2014 at approximately 11:30 p.m., ASU Police received a call to assist a student in distress behind her residence hall. Upon responding ASU Officers located the female student on the North West side of campus and the student alleged that she had been physically assaulted by a non-student ex-boyfriend.

The alleged perpetrator, Shawn George Hamilton, is a black male, approximately 22 years old and is described as being 5’10”, 180 lbs., wearing dark pants, black hoodie shirt. He is reportedly driving a black BMW sedan. ASU Police are continuing to investigate the incident.

It is difficult to provide suggestions on how to take preventative steps to reduce the risk of similar situations when the reported perpetrator is known to you. Unfortunately, although the majority of assaults are perpetrated by friends, acquaintances, or partners of the victims, the majority of prevention tips are modeled after perpetrators that are unknown to the victim. Recognizing this, and recognizing that, ultimately, it is not the responsibility of the victim to prevent their own assault, we offer the following advice to promote general risk awareness:

  • To protect yourself, always be aware of your surroundings, trust your instincts and immediately notify ASU Police at 828-262-2150 if you are concerned for your safety.
  • If you feel your safety is at risk, or need assistance or an escort on campus; please contact ASU Police at 828-262-2150.
  • Stay with groups of friends you know and trust.
  • Trust your instincts and if you see a person of concern, immediately notify ASU Police. By taking action, you might be saving lives.

Anyone with information regarding this or any other crime is encouraged to call the ASU Police Department at 262-2150, or you may also report crimes anonymously at: http://police.appstate.edu/crime-tip-submission-form.

You can also contact Crime Stoppers at: https://www.tipsubmit.com/webtips.aspx?AgencyID=1251 or Text “NCTIP plus your tip” to 274637 (CRIMES). If your information leads to an arrest, you may be eligible for a reward up to $1000.00.
