Boone Police Department Warns of Water Scam and New River Light & Power Scam

Jan. 13, 2015. In the last few days, three Town of Boone commercial water customers have received phone calls from someone claiming to represent the Town of Boone. The caller demanded immediate payment for a delinquent account or the customer’s water would be shutoff. This is a scam.

The Town of Boone may contact customers, as a courtesy, if their water account is delinquent and will accept credit card payment over the phone, but the Town of Boone never will demand immediate payment. All calls from the Town of Boone should come from a local number. The Town of Boone never uses independent contractors to make calls on their behalf.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the Town of Boone, feel free to contact them before making any payments or sharing any financial information. The Water Department billing number is 828-268-6220.

This scam is very similar to a scam reported by New River Light and Power (see below) on Jan. 9, 2015. If you receive a call and think it isn’t legitimate, please contact the Boone Police Department or your local law enforcement agency before sharing any financial information or making a payment.
