    May 16, 2016 The victim had agreed to give a ride to Randy Craig Pollard, 20, of 338 Brook Hollow Road in Boone from a business on West King Street to the Greenway Trail parking area off Hunting Hills Lane in exchange for cash. When the victim and Mr. Pollard arrived at the Greenway Trail, Mr. Pollard produced a knife and demanded cash from the victim.   • Boone Man Arrested for Vehicle B&E, Stealing Firearm and Credit Cards

    May 11, 2016 On May 9, 2016, an incident was reported to the Boone Police Department regarding the Breaking and Entering of a vehicle and subsequent larceny of a firearm from within. On May 10, 2016, Boone Police developed a suspect, Jeffrey Stuart Cashwell, 44, of Boone.   • High-Speed Pursuit in Excess of 100 MPH Ends in Crash a Mile Inside Wilkes County Line

    May 9, 2016 Deputies with the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office engaged in a high-speed pursuit, at times in excess of 100 mph, in the wee hours of Saturday night that ended with the arrest of Thomas Church, 25, of Deep Gap, according to a deputy’s shift report.   • Stines Sentenced to Prison for Sex Offense

    May 9, 2016 On May 4, 2016, John Anthony Stines, age 33, plead guilty to four counts of attempted first degree statutory sexual offense. On Oct. 12, 2015, a 5-year-old girl reported to her mother that Mr. Stines, her stepfather, had touched her inappropriately. The child was interviewed at the Children’s Advocacy Center of the Blue Ridge and disclosed that Stines had sexually abused her on four separate occasions at their residence in Deep Gap, North Carolina. / Read more…



  • Town of Boone Files Complaint Against Mountain View Speedway

The Town of Boone has filed a complaint with the Watauga County Clerk of Court to enforce its zoning ordinance against the owner and operators of Mountain View Speedway at the old fairgrounds on Roby Greene Road. The Town previously issued a notice of violation and order to cease activities at the race track until a permit was properly applied for and issued as required under the zoning ordinance.   • Woman Who Cut Fetus Out of Former ASU Student Sentenced To 100 Years in Prison

    May 4, 2016 On Friday, a Colorado judge handed down a 100-year sentence to the woman that cut a fetus from the womb of a former Appalachian State University student last year, according to the Denver Post. Chief District Judge Maria Berkenkotter remarked on all of the things that the victim, Michelle Wilkins, who was 26 years old at the time of the attack, won’t ever be able to do with her daughter, Aurora.     May 4, 2016 High Country Crime Stoppers has issued a reward up to $1,000 for information leading the whereabouts and safe return of James Martin Roberts, 19. Roberts, who is a 5-foot-10-inch white male weighing about 145 pounds, was last seen near the ASU Holmes Convocation Center on Thursday, April 21, at about noon. He has brown hair and blue eyes.   • Boone Police ID Plane Crash Victims, Deceased is Ben Chappell of Boone, Two Injured From Banner Elk and Lenoir

    After having notified the victim’s families, Boone Police are releasing the identities of the occupants of the plane that crashed Monday afternoon at Boone Golf Course. The occupants were John Field Worsley II, 68, of Lenoir; Steven Cox Berry, 43, of Banner Elk and Benjamin (Ben) Franklin Chappell, 69, of Boone. At the time of this release both Worsley and Berry are listed in critical condition at Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem. Ben Chappell was pronounced deceased at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.



  • Avery Sheriff Hopes Autopsy Provides Clues in Death of Man Found in Creek Near Newland

Investigators with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office attended an autopsy performed by the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office in Winston Salem on Monday, April 25 regarding the individual who was found deceased in Squirrel Creek near Newland. He has brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a black, short sleeve, Appalachian State windbreaker, khaki shorts, gray new balance shoes and a white golf visor hat. He was last seen in the area around the ASU Convocation Center.

  • Two Avery County Residents Arrested for Forging Drug Prescription in Mitchell County

    April 19, 2016. On April 4, 2016 Detectives with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office received information of a forged prescription being passed in Mitchell County. An investigation confirmed the information to be correct and that the passing of the forged prescription had been done by an Avery County Resident. Two search warrants were subsequently served in the Cow Camp community.   • Thompson Sentenced for Kidnapping Ex-Wife

On April 14, 2016, Kenneth Ransom Thompson, age 54, was convicted by a jury of second degree kidnapping, assault on a female, and domestic criminal trespass in Watauga County Superior Court. In April of 2015, Thompson waited overnight in the woods for his former wife to come home from work and ambushed her in her front yard. He was armed with a pellet gun, a shotgun, and pepper spray. Thompson wrestled her to the ground and held her captive in the carport at her home for several hours before leaving, still armed with the shotgun. / Read more…

Additionally, the District Attorney’s Office identified Mr. Daniels as a habitual felon, thereby enhancing his sentence. Mr. Daniels had previously been convicted of five felonies (Breaking and Entering and Larceny twice, Possession of Methamphetamine, Sale and Delivery of a Schedule II Controlled Substance, and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon) in Mitchell, Avery and McDowell Counties, along with a number of misdemeanors and driving offenses. / Read more…

    March 10, 2016. The $100 bill appears to be new circulation. However, in the bold print on the front appear the words FOR MOTION PICTURE USE ONLY, rather than UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The fake currency does have a blue strip, but it’s printed on the surface. There is no light image of Benjamin Franklin on the right. The colored ink well, as well as the number “100” on the front and back do not change from orange to green when the bill changes position. It’s also been observed that the bills have a yellow pen mark wiped across the front, to cause confusion that the bills have already been tested for authenticity. Any business or persons coming into contact with a fraudulent $100 bill are encouraged to contact the Boone Police Department, or your local law enforcement. / Read more…

  • Case for October Death of Male, 28, Closed by Boone PD, Ruled Heroin Overdose

    March 1, 2016. On Oct. 18, 2015, at approximately 7:30 a.m., the Boone Police Department responded to investigate the report of a 28-year-old unresponsive male. This individual was identified as Anthony ‘Rocky’ Robert Surace. Surace was found inside the bathroom of his residence located at 1340 West King Street in Boone. During the investigation, evidence gathered indicated that Mr. Surace’s death was most likely due to an accidental drug overdose. / Read more…

    Feb. 26, 2016. On Feb. 19, Jesse Colton Grimes, 19, of Sugar Grove, was convicted of eleven counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and three counts of extortion. In 2014 and 2015, Grimes befriended several adolescent girls on social media websites. The 35-year-old Colorado woman who cut an unborn baby from the womb of a former Appalachian State University student was convicted of attempted first-degree murder, among other charges, on Tuesday.
