The Lakota Sioux Indian Dance Theatre is performing at the Schaefer Center on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. Enjoy a show featuring native dance, history and music reflecting the culture of the Sioux. This is a cultural experience you don’t want to miss!
“Attending a performance by the Lakota Sioux Indian Dance Theatre will not only be educational, but enjoyable for audiences of all ages,” said Anna Gaugert, director of marketing and public relations for Appalachian State’s cultural resources department. “Dancing, storytelling and singing are a central part of the life of the Lakota Sioux people. Typically only shared in the sacred circle on their reservations, the audience has the opportunity to view these meaningful traditions at the Schaefer Center, while celebrating the Lakota Sioux culture.”
The Lakota are a native American tribe that originated from the Great Lakes and were originally known as the Dakota. European and American expansion forced the tribes to move westward. The Lakota are well known for their traditions and culture in the Great Plains.
“The Sioux were one of the 30 tribes that lived on the Great Plains,” said Gaugert. “As fierce warriors and buffalo hunters, from 1830-1870 they were the most powerful Plains Indians. Today, the Lakota Sioux people live on reservations in North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota and Montana.”
The Lakota Sioux Indian Dance Theatre was founded in 1978 and provides viewers with a chance to witness holistic worldviews and cultures through the eyes of the Lakota Sioux people. The Lakota Dance Theatre has performed both nationally and internationally thanks to support from traditional Lakota natives, including educators, healers, community leaders, championship powwow dancers, singers and storytellers.
The Dance Theatre is directed by Henry Smith, who was also founder and artistic director of SOLARIS Dancer/Theatre and co-producer of a Bollywood film entitled Dil Sachcha Chehra Jootha “Who Is An Orphan?”
