Lillie Mae Walters, age 91, of Newland passed away on March 6, 2014 at her residence. 

A native of Avery County, she was born May 2, 1922 a daughter of the late Dan and Eddie Norman Holden. 

She was a homemaker, part of the Words of God Ministry and loved taking care of her family and cooking. 

Along with her parents, Lillie was preceded in death by her: husband, McDonald Walters; son, Billy Joe Walters; daughters, Margie Houston, Alma Jean Nelson, Shelby Jean Hughes, Denita Walters. 

Lillie has left to cherish her memory her: sons, Randy Walters and wife Carolyn of Newland, Raudy Walters and wife Penny of Marion; daughter, Shelia Henson and husband Bill of Morganton, Freda Bryant and husband Jessie of Morganton, Annie Mae Harmon and husband Jerry of Linville; 21 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren. 

Funeral services for Lillie Mae Walters will be conducted on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel with Randy Walters and James Ballew officiating. Interment will follow in the Daniels Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour priot to the services.

Velma Ruth Guinn, D. March 5, 2014

Velma Ruth Guinn, age 77, of Linville Falls passed away on March 5, 2014 at Frye Regional Medical Center. 

She was born April 26, 1936 a daughter of the late Ken and Texie Hughes. 

Velma was a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church and enjoyed reading, flowers, and being with her grandchildren. 

Along with her parents, Velma was preceded in death by her: husband, James Edward Guinn. 

Velma has left to cherish her memory her: children, who were also her best friends, Jimmy Ray Guinn of Jonesborough, TN., Debbie Stafford and husband Nelson of Plumtree, Frank Guinn of Jonas Ridge, Danny Guinn and wife Kathy of Plumtree, Ned Quinn and wife Lisa of Linville Falls, Barbara Pollygus of Linville Falls; grandchildren, Chris Guinn of Linville, Jesse Stafford and wife Kimberly of Morehead, NC, Adam Stafford of Plumtree, Tina Guinn of Asheville, Levi Pollygus of Linville Falls, James Chapman of Marion, Keith Chapman of Marion, Logan Guinn of Plumtree, Makayla Guinn of Plumtree, Colby Ned Guinn of Linville Falls. 

Funeral services for Velma Ruth Guinn will be conducted on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Pisgah United Methodist Church with Rev. Ted Henry and Rev. Keith Tutterow officiating. Interment will follow in the Pisgah Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until the service hour at the church.

Bo Ollis, age 34, of Newland passed away on March 5, 2014 at Johnson City Medical Center. 
A native of Avery County, he was born November 5, 1979 a son of Lake Lure and Rosalie McKinney Ollis of Newland. 

He enjoyed riding 4 wheelers and loved anything with a steering wheel. 

Bo was preceded in death by his: paternal grandparents, Ernest and Ethel Ollis; maternal grandfather, Fred McKinney. 

He was one of a kind, generous and loving, a friendly person who would give his shirt off his back to help someone and loved to talk and meet new people. 

Along with his parents, Bo has left to cherish his memory his: sister, Gwen Nanney and husband Gerald of Marion; nieces and nephews, Sydney, Josie, Lindsey, Cayden; maternal grandmother, Zennie Mae McKinney of Newland. 

Funeral services for Bo Ollis will be conducted on Friday, March 7th at 7:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Turbyfill and Pastor Adam Davis officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services.

Steve Chandler, D. March 4, 2014

ChandlerStephen Renick Chandler, 65, of Banner Elk and formerly of Salisbury, died Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Feb. 28, 1949, in Salisbury, he was the son of Valerie Maeder Chandler of Terrell and the late Robert L. “Bob” Chandler.

Steve was educated in the Salisbury school system, graduated from Boyden High School, Class of 1967 and attended Catawba College and Brevard College.

He was part-owner of Home Oil and Coal and Home Concrete before selling the company. He owned and operated Clemmons Produce & Mountain Crafts in Banner Elk.

Steve was a member of Banner Elk Christian Fellowship. He was involved in law enforcement and served with the Salisbury Police Department Reserves, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department Auxiliary for 30 years. He served as president of the Salisbury Rowan Merchants Association for two different terms, was a former member of the Spencer Moose Lodge and served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary

Steve joined the Boy Scouts as a child and remained active throughout his life, serving as Assistant Scout Master of Troop 448 and received the Silver Beaver Award. Steve was a Wood Badge Instructor and a Wood Badge Course Director. Every October for more than a decade he portrayed Professor Marvel at Autumn at Oz on Beech Mountain to the delight of thousands of children and adults.

Currently, Steve was serving as chairman of the Banner Elk Tourism and Development Association and Treasurer of the Greater Banner Elk Heritage Foundation.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert L. “Robin” Chandler, III and a sister, Linda Chandler.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Rebecca Ruhlman Chandler, whom he married March 20, 1970; sons, Brad Chandler of Banner Elk and Nick Chandler of Concord; granddaughter, Emma Chandler; sister, Susan Smith and husband Reis of Wilmington; sister-in-law, Gayle Chandler of Leesburg, Fla.; mother-in-law, Betty Ruhlman of Salisbury; brother-in-law, Robert Ruhlman and wife Jane of Salisbury; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service and t:A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the Chapel in the Pine Mausoleum at Rowan Memorial Park, 4125 Franklin Community Center Rd., Salisbury, NC 28144, with the Rev. Carl Clawson, minister of Banner Elk Christian Fellowship, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A Celebration of Life will be held immediately following the service at the Hotel Salisbury & Conference Center, 530 Jake Alexander Blvd South (former Holiday Inn).
