George W. Wright, age 95, of Newland passed away on Sunday January 13, 2013 at his residence.

A native of Avery County, he was born August 30, 1917 a son of the late William and Julia Johnson Wright.

He was a member of the United States Army where he served in WWII. He was a Private First Class and received the American Theater Service Medal, Eame Service Medal with the bronze star, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal Distinguished Unit Badge.

George was a member of Johnson Chapel Church and enjoyed talking and going to McDonalds.

Along with his parents, George was preceded in death by his: son, Scotty Wright; wife, Hazel Wright; brothers, James Shoupe, Sr., Grover Shoupe, Woodrow Wright; sister, Pearl Johnson.

A friend to everyone, George has left to cherish his memory his: sister, Myrtle Miller of Charlotte, NC; two nieces, six nephews, numerous great nieces and great nephews.

Funeral services for George W. Wright will be conducted on Thursday January 17, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Reed Callahan officiating. Interment will follow in theHughes Cemetery . The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until the service hour.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Mayland Community College for the Scotty Wright Scholarship Fund.

Rev. Burnie King, age 70, of Linville passed away on January 9, 2013 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

A native of Avery County, he was born September 17, 1942 in Yancey County, the son of the late Arthur Alexander and Margaret Dugger King.

Burnie was a member of Linville Evangelical Methodist Church and had worked for Grandfather Golf and Country Club as a Landscaper for over 20 years.

He enjoyed listening to music and singing, especially bluegrass and was an artist.

Burnie has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Eula Owens King of the home; cousin, Stella Cook of Elk Park; several nieces and nephews, including special niece, Rebecca Ellis is Mississippi.

Funeral services for Burnie King will be conducted on Friday January 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Linville Evangelical Methodist Church with Dr. Ken Harper officiating. Interment will follow in the Tanglewood Cemetery . The family will receive friends on Thursday January, 10, 2013 from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the church.

Ada Townsend, D. Jan. 8, 2013

Ada Frances Townsend , age 92, of Banner Elk passed away on January 8, 2013 in Montgomery, AL.

She was born June 28, 1920 in Honaker, VA a daughter of the late Albert and Dora Puckett Musick.

Ada was a homemaker, an avid gardener and enjoyed her flowers. Everyone enjoyed her flowers and all of her canned goods that she had every summer.

Along with her parents, Ada was preceded in death by her husband, Henry William Townsend.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who was a wonderful provider for her family and loved ones, Ada has left to cherish her memory her: daughter, Shirley Townsend Pettit of Montgomery, AL; son, James Michael Townsend and wife Alice of Blountville, TN; 4 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren.

Graveside services for Ada Frances Townsend will be conducted on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in the Townsend Cemetery.
