Christopher McCoy, D. May 30, 2012.
Christopher Thomas McCoy, age 39, of Newland passed away on Wednesday May 30, 2012 at Johnson City Medical Center.
He was of the Baptist Faith.
He enjoyed tinkering with cars and even though he lived in the mountains, he loved the beach.
Christopher has left to cherish his memory his: grandparents, Florence and Paul Farthing of Barnwell, SC.; daughter, Jaci McCoy; father, Frank T. McCoy and wife Linda of Barnwell, SC.; brother, Ryne McCoy of Chandler, AZ.
Funeral services for Christopher McCoy will be conducted on Friday, June 1st 2:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Greene officiating.

Doris Hampton

Doris Hampton, D. May 29, 2012
Doris Lee Lambert Hampton, age 97, passed away on Tuesday May 29, 2012 at Christian Care Center of Johnson City.
A native of Avery County, she was born May 11, 1915 a daughter of the late Eston and Carmie Sturgill Lambert.
She was a member of the First Nazarene Church in Elizabethton, TN.
Doris graduated from Newland High School, attended Appalachian State Teachers College and graduated from Crossnore Business School.
She retired as Director of Admission from Jess Parrish Memorial Hospital in Titusville, FL.
Doris enjoyed reading, crocheting and gardening.
Along with her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her: husband, Clifford Brown Hampton; grandson, Mark Godby; sisters, Florence Easterling, June Henson, Eileen Smith; brother, Charles Lambert.
Doris has left to cherish her memory her: daughters, Linda Sease and husband Wendell of Clemson, SC., Merry Frances Plant and husband Carl of East Palatka, FL.; sons, Jim Hampton and wife Judy of Elizabethton, TN., Joe Hampton of Fort Myers, FL.; sister, Fleeta Taylor of Fayetteville, NC.; 5 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Doris Lee Lambert Hampton will be conducted on Sunday, June 3rd at 3:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Godby officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services. Interment will follow in the Tanglewood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Luke Hampton, Levi Hampton, William Godby, Joseph Godby, Will Hampton and Michael Hampton.

Michael Lane Carpenter

Michael Lane Carpenter, D. May 27, 2012
Michael Lane “Mike” Carpenter,Sr., age 56, of the Pyatte community passed away on Sunday May 27, 2012 at Watauga Medical Center.
A native of Avery County, he was born January 19, 1956 a son of the late William Harlan and Clarice Carpenter Carpenter.
He was a Christmas Tree Farmer and enjoyed camping, hunting and being with his family.
Mike will be greatly missed by his family and has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Debbie Dunlap Carpenter of the home; son, Michael Lane Carpenter, Jr. of Montezuma; son, Jesse Aaron Carpenter of Asheville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Wanda Carpenter of Big Buck Hill and Richard and Terri Carpenter of Pyatte; niece, Suzanne Calhoun and husband Mike of Pyatte; great niece, Haley Calhoun of Pyatte.
Funeral services for Michael L. Carpenter will be conducted on Tuesday, May 29th at 8:00 pm at the Grandfather Chapel with Pastor Tim Ruppard officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour. Interment will Wednesday, May 30th at 10:00 a.m.in the Big Meadows Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Selby Jones Cancer Center c/o ARHF PO Box 2600 Boone, NC 28607.

Ronald J. Benfield

Ronald J. Benfield, D. May 24, 2012.
Ronald Jan Benfield, age 69, of Pineola passed away on Thursday May 24, 2012 at his residence.
A native of Avery County, he was born March 1, 1943 a son of the late Shoner and Bessie Odom Benfield.
He served in the United States Army during Vietnam in Mortuary Affairs.
Ronald retired from the Avery County Register of Deeds office. He had also served as Veterans Affair Officer for Avery County for many years, was a Licensed Funeral Director from 1965 – 2006 and was a Funeral Director with Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home from 1965 – 1973.
He was a member of Pat Ray Post #4286, the D.A.V and the NCFDA.
Along with his parents, Ronald was preceded in death by his: brother, Leonard Benfield; sisters, Edna Calloway and Ola Gray.
Ronald has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Cathy Benfield; son, Robbie Benfield; granddaughters, Kaitlen Benfield and Mollie Buchanan; a host of nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services will be held at Mountain Home National Cemetery with funeral services to be announced at a later date.

Bruce Edward Cantrell

Bruce Edward Cantrell, D. May 24, 2012
Bruce Edward Cantrell, 77, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Cantrell was born October 21, 1934, in Avery County to the late Cleophas and Mattie Wright Cantrell. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Cleophas Cantrell, Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Cantrell, a son, Charlie Cantrell, and wife Juanita, a daughter, Lydia Hoilman and husband, Keith Hoilman; four grandchildren, Charlie Cantrell, Lila Cantrell, Josh Hoilman and Jessica Hoilman; two stepsons, Vince Ingram and Brian Ingram and wife, Joanna, four step grandchildren, Lauren, Lindsey, Christian, and Blake; a brother, Jack Cantrell, a sister, Rita Taylor and husband, Page Taylor, and several nieces and nephews; also, Mr. Cantrell’s constant companion and man’s best friend, Twigg.
Mr. Cantrell was a retired carpenter and Christmas tree grower. He enjoyed farming, riding his four-wheeler and spending time with family.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 26, at 2 PM in the chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, in Newland, with Pastor Jim Shoupe officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until the funeral hour. Interment follows at the Hughes Cemetery on Squirrel Creek.
