Aspiring Chefs at Avery High School to Host Second Community Prix Fixe Dinner May 19

By Jessica Isaacs | jessica@highcountrypress.com

Aspiring chefs from Martha Godwin’s foods and culinary courses at Avery High hosted their inaugural community dinner in April, opening up the school to the public for the first time and inviting friends and neighbors to try out the recipes they’ve been working to master.

The next dinner event is right around the corner, so don’t miss your chance to support local students and dine out with some of the area’s up-and-coming chefs.

Last month’s dinner featured a four-course prix fixe meal that included tomato basil soup, chicken marsala with polenta and asparagus, caprese salad and tiramisu.

The next prix fixe dinner will take place at the school on May 19. Tickets are on sale now for just $20 and the group hopes to fill all 45 seats.

The May menu will include:

  • Vichyssoise
  • Chicken Cordon Bleu with broccoli and butter herbed cous-cous
  • Mesclun salad with pear, walnut and bleu cheese crumbles
  • Profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce

“We’re inviting the public to come and see what the students are doing,” said Godwin. “We’re doing a prix fixe dinner to show what the program is all about and what they’re learning. It will give my kids more real life experience working with the public — some will be working in the back and some will be working the front of the house.”

While Godwin’s classes have enjoyed opportunities to cater for local organizations and large groups, like the county’s board of commissioners and the education foundation, these community dinners are the first time they have been able to experience working a restaurant environment within the school that’s open to the public.

“An interaction with the public and bringing the public into the high school—I don’t know that anyone has really done that before,” Godwin said. “Building those kinds of relationships with the community and showing them what we’re doing in class will also give the kids real-life culinary experience.”

In addition to preparing the food, students will concentrate on plating and service.

Dinner will be served in Viking Hall at Avery High.
