Lucky for us in the High Country, Blowing Rock is home to the Southeast’s favorite Wild West theme park, Tweetsie Railroad, and we don’t have to travel very far to get in on the fun every summer. Temperatures are dropping and the seasons are changing, but the thrill continues through the month of October with Tweetsie’s annual Ghost Train Halloween Festival.

The park is still home to great adventure during the day on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, but, when the sun goes down, the bright and sunny atmosphere is quickly transformed into a spine-chilling site for fearsome fun.

Tweetsie now closes for the day at 6 p.m. and reopens for thrills and chills at 7:30 p.m. for Ghost Train festivities on Friday and Saturday evenings. It stays open through the night until 11:30 p.m., but no one is admitted after 10 p.m.

The first Ghost Train leaves the station at nightfall, usually shortly before or close to 8 p.m. this time of year, and it runs approximately every half hour throughout the night. When you’re ready to embark on this spooky adventure, secure your place in line, grab a seat when the train pulls up (first come, first serve seating) and prepare yourself for the darkness that’s lurking through the night!

The train may be the signature attraction of the park’s Halloween festival, but there’s so much more to see when you’re at Tweetsie this time of year. The dark skies of the October nights play host to other festivities, like trick-or-treating for the kids, special Halloween performances, the Haunted House, the Tweetsie Palace Spooktacular, the Warp Tunnel and the Creepy Carnival.

When night falls, the park’s Hacienda becomes “the Boneyard,” which features the Black Hole, the 3D Maze and the Freaky Forest.

The Ghost Train ride, the Haunted House and the Freaky Forest may be frightening for children under 8 years old or those who are easily unsettled by darkness or loud noises. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of fun to be had for little members of the family in other aspects of the park.

Tickets for admission to the Halloween Festival are on sale for $34 per person, and kids ages 2 and under get in for free. Although the first train ride leaves close to 8 p.m., you might want to be there when the gates open at 7:30 p.m. to beat the crowd and get a good spot in line for the first trip.

It’s not unusual for the festival to sell out, especially as we get closer to Halloween, so the park recommends buying your tickets in advance. You can get them online or call the toll-free ticket order line at 1-877-TWEETSIE.

In the meantime, check out Tweetsie online for more information about the Ghost Train and the Halloween Festival season.
