1) Boone Country Dancers Will Return to Valle Crucis on May 2

The Boone Country Dancers will be at the Apple Barn in Valle Crucis for its next community contra dance on Saturday, May 2. This is a rare opportunity to dance at the Apple Barn for the second week in a row. Everyone is welcome to attend regardless of dance experience.

The evening will start with a beginners’ workshop from 7:30-8 p.m. The goal of the workshop is to teach the fundamentals of contra dance with a focus on having fun. After the workshop, the regular dance will run from 8-11 p.m. with a waltz break at 9:30 p.m. The dance will feature the band Firefly and the caller will be Stephanie Marie.

Dancers of all ages are encouraged to attend and no partner is necessary. Come as you are and wear clean, soft-soled flexible shoes for dancing. As always, our dances are smoke and alcohol free. Admission to the dance is $7 for adults, $5 for high school students and free to anyone 12 years old or younger.

2) Watauga County to Host Collection Drives for Household Hazardous Waste, Community Pride Week in May

The Watauga County Sanitation and Recycling Department will host the Spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 336 Landfill Road in Boone. Residents are encouraged to bring hazardous waste materials such as: paints, stains and varnishes; chemicals; cleaners; used oil; mercury items; batteries; pesticides; and electronics.

Additionally, the annual Community Pride Week Collection Drive will be held the week of May 11-16 at 336 Landfill Road in Boone. This event promotes free disposal of furniture, appliances, rock/brick/concrete/cement, asphalt (excluding shingles), scrap metal and brush (excluding stumps) and is available only to Watauga County residents. This is a great opportunity to clean up our community!

3) Southern Folk Art Show to be Held in West Jefferson May 2

Join the Florence Thomas Art School, 10 S. Jefferson Ave. in West Jefferson, from 2-5 p.m. on May 2 for an opening reception of the second annual Southern Folk Art Show. Featured will be folk artists Charlie Frye, Eric Cunningham, Chris Troxell, Deborah Tallarico and the Folk Art Instruments of Isaac Hall. 4) Community College to Host Free Business Lessons for Entrepreneurs in Watauga

MAY 12: “Business Essentials,” 1-3 p.m. at Blowing Rock Fire and Rescue on Valley Boulevard. During this seminar, the North Carolina Department of Revenue and North Carolina Secretary of State will cover basic requirements to help businesses in North Carolina understand the laws and obligations necessary to be compliant. MAY 21: “Customer Service for the Business Owner,” 8:30-11:30 a.m. at Tweetsie Railroad Conference Room in Blowing Rock. Speaker will be small business expert Russ Seagle. Free workshop.
